Even though the process in Mexico can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, it is nothing compared to what Mexicans have to go through to get US citizenship! My husband and I got our temporary residency in Mexico in 2022 by presenting our financials to the Mexican consulate in the US (with an appointment) and finishing up in Mexico. We have since renewed it for 3 years, and at the end of that we will be permanent residents. Most of it is easy to do on your own, even without speaking Spanish, but we did get someone to help us to do the 3 year renewal, mostly because they could get an appointment and expedite it.

One important topic to mention. If like many of us your Mexican Nationality name is different than in the States. The documents you present at the consulate have to match the name used in Mexico. Meaning if your name includes your maternal last name as an example. You will have to update whatever document you present like a water or gas bill to include your full Mexican name. That is my tip for the day!

Maybe a stupid question but when they create your Mexican birth certificate, what city do they list as place of birth? Do you get to choose? For example, city where your mother or father was born or ??? Will it list a Mexican city? I recently discovered a Mexican birth certificate that lists my place of birth the city where my dad was born. I’m guessing that my parents at some point went I was young registered me there so now I’m wondering if I already have dual citizenship

You’re awesome for relaying what you need to get your dual citizenship. As I was just in Guadalajara, visiting my dad and my family and before I left the states I brought my documentation of my birth with my drivers and my tribal affiliation and the second day I was in Mexico. I went and applied for my citizenship with my father as he was my interpreter. And thank God that I brought all my documentation that I needed I thought because it was exactly what I needed and my father had to get his birth certificate to show that he was Mexican citizen and not even two or three days later went back into the office and I was officially a citizen of Mexico 🇲🇽 and now I have my birth certificate and Mexican. so my next step I’m praying for is to get my passport when I go back and I will try to help my Tia there also who is never traveled outside of Mexico. So we both can get our passports together I pray and travel outside the country together. I am trying to get all my family to get theirs so we can travel together but yes you are awesome for helping people figure out if they’re eligible or what they need to do and I very much appreciate that.
