As you say, with oesophageal cancer it is often 'when' and not 'if' you are going to die. As someone who went through the experience of oesophageal cancer treatment, chemo and the op, I was afraid of the bad odds of survival. I found no help online so I decided to put my experiences on KZfaq to help others to think positive. Video here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN-pZs2I06e8aKs.htmlsi=_P1-rzwWTe5M2yev I love sailing in very old and new boats and have crossed oceans and raced dinghys on the local puddle. Hello Rodger, interesting story. An English friend here in usa (82) recently had similar OP. I will forward to him, he will relate. I also can relate too as in 2000 when I was 39/40 I had esophageal and Rt tonsil cancer. 23 years later I’m still here too.😇 My ‘cure’ as that’s what it is now was a little different , being much higher up my throat. I had surgery first (before op to minimize recovery issues and tissue damage from radiation). I had a ‘free flap’ from my stomach sewn into my throat to replace the Rt tonsil and surrounding area into the esophagus, with a fatty part of the stomach lining patch outside to make checking the health of the graft easy for the first week. I also had a stomach tube(came out my belly) , the best thing ever , I lived on it for 3 months and it stayed in for almost 6 months(just in case). The skills to do the surgery thru my mouth was originally developed by surgeons in Taiwan , they did have to split my jaw though and bolt back together. 2 months after I had healed they then gave me a month of 5 days/week targeted radiation on my throat. But I was also give as an experiment ‘anifostine’ as a large subqtanious injection just before radiation to protect me from the burning effects (internal sunburn) of radiation. A method first tried in Turkey! The drug was developed to give to soldiers just before the got exposed to nuclear bomb radiation ! It worked amazing and I had did not get the peeling skin and blistering in my throat usually associated with this type of radiation treatment. I also did not have to have all my teeth removed as did 2 other people who had similar radiation and surgery in a similar time frame ( one did not make it as foodie who could deal with no normal food). Today I have dry mouth from the radiation (no chemo). The saliva glands and taste buds get effected by the radiation. Only half my throat swallows as a lot of nerves were removed on the right side of throat when they removed the lymph nodes contaminated with waste cancer. These nerves control the muscles. ( well something like that). Mayonnaise is my friend I use it with every bite/meal as it’s the best lubricant for swallowing along with a hot drink, tea or coffee. Cold water etc does not help much. I have just started on a saliva boosting drug , not seen much effect yet. So all in all I’m doing just fine, I have annoyingly a lot of acid reflux, supposedly unrelated (but I think lack of saliva washing down my throat does not help). I avoid those foods people thing are ‘juicy’ like steak as it’s really dry and it makes your saliva glands work overtime creating the juicy watery mouth (that I don’t have!). My taste is essentially normal, I almost never drink but a Guinness before a meal goes down ok but after the first bit of food tastes like the first beer you had as a teenager , awful! Any other beer or wine is just as overpowering. However English real ale when I visited GB would slip down beautifully so prehaps a reason to return to the uk now I have sold my businesses and retired! Rather long winded comment but you can relate I’m sure and anybody else in the same situation too maybe. All the best Cheers Warren Time to fix up my Albin27!

I then after rinsing it out, I put some fabric conditioner for about five minutes and quickly give it a rinse but not too much then leave it to dry for a couple of days. it smells brilliant every time I hoover. Hi! I like the video. I'm more of a BSAP fella myself, but I always do like the tales of the "black devils" rolling out. Question though, always been curious: Did the Rhodesian Security Forces have any firefighting units? Or was firefighting supplied by local brigades around the country?

I don't think so. For small fires it was break off a branch and diy. Our Eland gun would often set off a bush fire in the winter but we just let it burn. No 'end result' difference from locals burning the brush to get new growth.

Same issue after two months of use, Dyson did however send me a new one free. Anyway, Dyson vacuums are extremely sensitive. I had been using mine to pick up joint compound dust (with small attachment tool) and it quickly clogged up everything and basically ruined the filter. Even after a thorough cleaning with compressed air tool, the filter was faulty/ruined. Now If I’ve got a pile of dirt/dust, etc., I’m careful to get most of it up with a dustpan and broom first, then vacuuming remaining.

I wasn't in the regiment at the beginning but we had regular army 'can't see me suits' to start with including camo tank suits. Then we changed over to black tank suits. I can't remember the exact date of the changeover but it was about a year before the end.

@@smacksman1 I know they used brushstroke and black simultaneously for some time but I thought it depended on the mission, since the photos of tank crews (when they got captured T55s) are all in camo jumpsuits and that was in '79 if i recall correctly. Question I have is about dress uniforms. RLI, RAR and the rest of the army used greens with their unit patches sewn on, but I've never seen one for the RhACR/RAC. Yes. The Intra Coastal Waterway has very few opportunities to sail. Often when there is a wide expanse of water it is very shallow and you have to follow the dredged channel. The exceptions are the big bays like the Chesapeake. Even following the buoyed channel we still ran aground several times with 5 foot draught! When I came back in 2015 I bought an Albin 27 motor cruiser to go to New Orleans by the ICW and the only time I could have sailed was in the Gulf of Mexico. As a tourist the ICW is great. Congratulations on your thorough restoration of a rare survivor and your decision to return the boat to the half-deck configuration of the original. The rig would appear to be the biggest departure from the originals, which would have either had a taller mast or longer hoist for the main and not have carried a topsail. Your approach would make it more practical to add square footage to the rig without carrying an even larger main. The sandbags would have weighed between about 25 - 50 lbs and had sturdy canvas or leather "handles" to help the crew move them from leeward to windward. The few paintings and models extant show the bags placed outside the cockpit coaming. As Traditions and Memories of American Yachting makes clear, the first cat-rigged small boat (Una boat in the UK) was also shipped from the New Jersey/New York area.

Lack of funds put a big restraint on getting Emma going again. I used the spars that came with the boat and bought second hand sails that almost fitted.. Wonderful to watch. This was my last stamping grounds on SAR as a fireman. I started in Germiston then worked out of Kimberley for years on the big 25NCs and finally ended up working out of Voorbaai. After firing the fast mainlines I did find the George to Knysna line extremely easy to work. Even hand firing a GEA garratt up Montagu was easy work after Kimberley. Looking at your clip around Victoria Bay reminded me of a night we were working back to George on a class 24 when the ashpan fell off. I had to get under the engine and unbolt it to stop it dragging on the track. Once back at George I packed the drivers well polished kit into his bucket when he noticed his shifting spanner was missing. "Where's my spanner?" he asked. Of course I had left it down on the track near Victoria Bay. He knew this right away and said to me "well you best get yourself down there and go fetch it". I replied "no ways am I walking all that way for a spanner" and he replied "don't be bloody stupid, take the engine" and sure enough off I went on this class 24 alone back down the dark track. . Driving a big hissing steam loco alone along a dark forest track is extremely scary work and an experience I will never forget.

We stayed by the line in 1982, and rode on it in 1984. The locos were all Class 24 Berkshires. I was told during the 1984 visit that one of them had derailed when going down the grade from George. When we came back from Knysna, at the foot of the climb back to George, it started to rain. The crew detached two goods cars from the train, and put them in a siding. Then, we had to make a request stop on the grade. You could tell the driver absolutely didn't want to come to a stop - but he had to. When he started back up the grade, the normally "slippery" 2-8-4 was guaranteed to slip!
