I think all the feeling that went into his singing was based on personal experience.

Well, I heard that he was going to offer this to the boys from Jacksonville, let them be first to release it, then the plane crash happened. Just got to wonder what their version would have been like.

It is said Neil wrote this after spending time with Lynyrd Skynyrd after their word wars. Neil wrote it, I have read, after spending time talking to some of the band and their families about the U.S. Civil War. He offered it to LS but then the band had the unfortunate airplane accident, so he kept it as his own. Widely considered one of Neil Young's best songs, as it is raw, and could be about a lot of things any of us might experience.

Way too many of these guys self destructed. This is a great song but that high harmony I think his brother did on the original recording is sorely missed…

He sounded horrible partly because he had knocked out his front teeth. Worst thing that happened was tom petty having a hit with feel a whole lot better. Gave Gene the means to complete his self destruction. I wonder what was on the cassettes his gf is said to have taken after he died… a pity she didn’t seem to make them available.

I was a kid in the early 1970s on Star Route Road in my white house in Mt Washington Kentucky watching the music video Go All The Way on television and gettung to know and seeing and talking to my darling young girl Cousin visiting me and my family and our chickens with her sweet smile . Great memory and a great song.
