My parts problem is minuscule compared to what the people (on both sides) in Eastern Europe are experiencing :(. The project limbo has given me time to think and design a shop I want so hopefully this year I can get started on that. Time to reduce wrenching/welding out in the elements for this guy lol

Hey man awesome videos! I live in Alaska and have wanted to build a rig for years and the time has finally come, one of my main frustrations in my plans is what I want to use for my steering application. If possible I’d love to acquire a gaz 71 set up as I would like to build a rig of similar size and capability. I guess what I’m getting around to asking is, what did the process of purchasing and shipping this unit look like and what did it end up costing to get it here? Thanks!

What part of the country are you in? I've been collecting parts and making plans for an off-road semi amphibious wheelchair with electric Power. There's a loophole in the law of my state, if it's less than 56 in wide and has a cap at 45 mph, I can drive it with no license or insurance. Normally I would have to stick to the sidewalk, but we don't have them so I'm entitled to ride in the road. I live in the middle of the rainforest right on Puget sound, it's very difficult to enjoy this up close because of the terrain. I'm roughly thinking of a three-wheeled vehicle using a majority of bicycle parts but with a great deal of articulation like you see on the high end rock crawlers. I've been planning long enough and collecting parts that I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed by it. I would love the opportunity to be able to go over my ideas with somebody else mechanically minded before I use a valuable part in irreversible way

How is the parking brake implemented? the differential in the gearbox is not fixed!? I think this will create a problem with diagonal hanging! I also think it’s worth taking into account that such a situation is possible that when the lever is pressed, braking will begin before the electromagnetic clutches disconnect the clutches from traction, it would probably be better to place the limit switches much higher so that they work already with a very small movement of the lever! but i could be wrong
@pinestumps8622
@pinestumps8622 Жыл бұрын
Parking brake will be conducted via the steering brakes. The rotor on the drive line is intended for service use, mainly to stop the torque converter for shifting the automatic transmission.

how much weight do you think I could stick in plating on this, also, do you think this design could accommodate torsion bar suspension?
@pinestumps8622
@pinestumps8622 2 жыл бұрын
I've had customers add their own torflex axles to this design, so it's definitely possible to add your own torsion bar axles. You could probably build the whole thing out of 1/4" steel if you wanted to while still keeping its amphibious capabilities. You'd drop its carrying capacity to zero though and reduce life of the half ton axle this design uses for steering.
@dinkelheit88
@dinkelheit88 2 жыл бұрын
@@pinestumps8622 with what I would like to change in this design, it would weigh probably more like 10 tonnes, maybe more. obviously I would need to get a 7000lb axle and find a way to fit that
@pinestumps8622
@pinestumps8622 2 жыл бұрын
@@dinkelheit88 20,000 lbs is way too much for this type of design as is. You'll need heavier axle spindles, higher load rating tires, heavier track cleats, thicker belting etc. It would end up looking like a foremost nodwell at the end of it

With the smoking: the turbine side oil seal on a turbo is a labyrinth seal. It requires a balance between oil pressure and exhaust back pressure to seal. Shorter and/or bigger bore exhausts may be highlighting a worn seal. When I first put a 3" pipe on my Pajero 2.8td, I was laying down smoke screens every time that I just had the truck idling. As soon as I revved it, the back pressure came up with the revs and the smoke stopped.

Out of interest if you reversed the transmission with the engine at the front and the drive at the back would your beam suspension then work?, while having the engine at the front would be less good for weight distribution it would give you more usable cargo space, always had a soft spot for tracked vehicles.

I would think that the tires would have absorbed some shock if the pressure was low enough. I am so grateful that you are doing this testing for us so we can learn the best way to go. I was thinking of doing cast aluminum for the exhaust coupler but who knows what the final design will be. It would be OK for me to use thicker steel because I am trying to build a more utility work vehicle that can carry materials, run an auger and maybe even a brush cutter. Your next design is going to be an improvement and this current one is still the first.
@pinestumps8622
@pinestumps8622 3 жыл бұрын
Well I had them aired up to about 5 lbs, probably higher than they should've been. I'm a big believer in pushing things to the limit and I ultimately did so in this test, better close to home than in some bush country. If your constraints allowed a heavier vehicle I think copying a skid steer oil bath chain case is acceptable, I did so on mine but the iron was to light. You would need probably something in the 1/4" range probably. I am really excited about my next design, I got a bulk order of GAZ-71 parts moving forward with my new supplier today! Now I'm thinking I might as well get a container shipped and add some Russian tires with them...
@chargermopar
@chargermopar 3 жыл бұрын
@@pinestumps8622 It's the same with my creations, I push them to the limit at my own place so if they fall apart they are easier to deal with. Skid steer parts are always heavy the axles have steel gussets that can be as thick as 1/4 inch. My machine needs to be tough but it's going to be low speed I like the hydraulic drive because it makes it possible to turn on any surface without having to speed up the engine. The exhaust system has been my confounding point but you are showing me the way. My idea had involved cast aluminum couplers which are a lot easier to fabricate using my waste oil foundry. The atac Canadian atv uses a joystick control like many skid steers have located in the center of the cab so either driver or passenger can operate it. Good luck on getting your supplies imported!

If the temps are agreeable, you could use high temp food grade cloth woven hose. Those are meant to take quite a lot of pressure and high temps (tho, i don't know if it's exhaust level temperature) and the core is a set of braided strands cured into the rubber, which prevents tearing (think rad hose on steroids). You could find a local supplier and just ask them for a sample...thus getting it for cheap. As for what you said regarding the machine opening up when being on soil vs concrete/tarmac, that's pretty much on point with how old skid steers felt, those early gen ones that utterly sucked to deal with.
@chargermopar
@chargermopar 3 жыл бұрын
I am sure you have plenty of us watching your videos. Besides the hose failure how are the tires holding up? Chinese rubber ok?
@pinestumps8622
@pinestumps8622 3 жыл бұрын
So far I think they're "meh" tires. I noticed the tread isn't very cut or tear resistant after skid steering on pavement (kinda like a crappy ag tire compound). The UV resistance isn't the greatest also, weather checking after only about 4 months in outside storage . Nowadays with more tire options coming out of Russia and Ukraine, I'd be more inclined to purchase those tires if I had to do it again (unless a domestic option opens up). Eastern Europe low pressure tire quality and tread compounds are more similar to mining and construction tires. With tariffs on Chinese tires still in place, the delivered cost end up about the same. The fat truck and other Canadian rigs seem to be using these just fine, but from my eyes there are other tires out there that can get you more bang for your buck. This is just my opinion from research I've done and my limited personal observations.
@chargermopar
@chargermopar 3 жыл бұрын
@@pinestumps8622 That's good to know. It also looks like your tires tend to get clogger with mud more than the others I have seen, maybe they just edit that out of their videos? When I finally decide where I am moving to I will hopefully have space to work and money from selling my extremely overpriced Miami home so maybe by then the tires will be more available. I am still thinking of a hydraulic drive system but with that comes extra noise. The good thing is that you lose no power when steering. Very impressed with your homemade rims, couplers and exhaust inflation system!
