David, I feel like you’ve been spying on me for the last few years. I’m 55, playing for 30 years, 4 handicap and for the longest time I had a very effective body release swing. The last 3 years or so I’ve played with my swing and wound up stuck between this forearm vs body release you so expertly dissected. The result was a very sloppy iron game. Earlier today I went down the KZfaq rabbit hole of forearm release type swings and thought damn, I really don’t want to learn a whole new swing. Thanks to your video you’ve assured me that there is nothing wrong with a body release swing and in fact I need to recommit to this very effective and easy to reproduce movement. Great information! Thanks.

To me, a swing change like this is quite subtle. Yes, it took time to be comfortable with it, but I don't like the assumption swing changes take forever. Golfers are stubborn. I think it just takes a willingness to incorporate a swing change on the course. Swing changes can happen instantly on the range and work. For the golfer to incorporate it, especially in a tense situation on the course, is what takes time.

I agree, getting it to the point where it performs under pressure is the ultimate goal. But changing a movement pattern can take as much as 3,000 to 5,000 reps, depending on the individual. At this point it will be ingrained and will perform under the pressures of the golf course. In Jason's example, he didn't just change one thing. There's numerous things within this, so it's a lot of work and a lot of repetition. Tiger often talked about the five stages of a swing change. Number one, getting it with his golf coach. Number two, getting it on his own without his golf coach behind him. Number three, getting it on the golf course out on his own, playing even nine holes. Number four, getting to a tournament practice round and being able to repeat what he'd been working on. And number five was tournament play.

hi David, great video thanks. A question. Some teachers 100% state that the shaft should be vertical at address and shaft lean only happen through the motion to be there at impact. Others, as you have here state the opposite, some even encourage more shaft lean than you demonstrate here with the shaft and lead arm in one line. I definitely find i strike the ball better with the first option and its actually easier to create lean at impact that way. I find when i pre set the lean at address i smother the ball and so end up scooping at it coming into impact, the exact opposite of what the intention is. some pros have lean at address and some don't, surely its just finding what works for the individual rather than trying to get something to work that just doesn't? any thoughts pleeeeeease?
@dlgolftips
@dlgolftips 19 күн бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for your message. Yes, I know some instructors will encourage the shaft to be vertical at address. Me personally, and the way I teach, that's not what I do for a couple of reasons. Number one, the club is designed to sit with the shaft leaning slightly forward at address. Ultimately, as you know, at impact, we want to arrive with the shaft leaning forward at impact. It can be very difficult if we don't start with some to try and create more in the downswing as we lean the shaft forward, the face will tend to open. So it's another variable that we have to fix. Even though if we do start with our hands in front of the ball at address, we want to encourage more of that at impact, which will slightly open the face, but much less than starting vertical. Players you see on TV will adjust the angle of the shaft in the address position, slightly more vertical or back would be suited to a fade shot, and slightly more forward would encourage more of a draw shape. Some pros will do this consciously, and others it will naturally happen due to their intention of the shot they're trying to hit. I know this is complex, but the way that I teach is hands slightly in front of the ball in the address position and then learn to create more at impact.

Question for you both, what are your thoughts about getting better rather than getting different? It seems everyone wants to change their swing to make it better rather than just improving the movement they already have with skill development?
@dlgolftips
@dlgolftips 19 күн бұрын
@@robertcourt8593 Hi Robert, this is a great question. Think of it that you have two buckets of water, one has technique in it and the other has skill. Now when you see a golfer who has a funky swing but gets the job done, they have a lot in their skill bucket and not as much in their technique bucket. Then you could have a golfer, and I see it a lot of times when I'm teaching, they have great technique so their technique bucket is quite full but zero skill to be able to strike the golf ball consistently. So I think we can't just turn around and say it's all about skill and to swing your swing. If you have incredible high skill level then yes, okay, you might get away with that. But in my view, if we can make the golf swing better technically and develop skill in the process, that's where real improvement will come. I hope that makes sense.
@robertcourt8593
@robertcourt8593 19 күн бұрын
@@dlgolftips yes make sense, thanks for answering. I agree that you can't just swing your swing if your 13° out to in with a 20° open club face but even then, I think change is learned and developed slowly, over time. Obviously you deal with many more golfers than I ever will but I have never come across a "normal" golfer who got drastically better in a short space of time through traditional teaching. It's only anecdotal but I have heard many people say that they had a lesson and came away more confused than before the lesson. Personally, I had an hour lesson many years ago. I was a fairly new golfer, hit the ball ok but pushed everything right of target. Within 10 minutes of the lesson starting I was hitting it straighter. By the end of the lesson we'd gone too far and once I was on my own I couldn't get the club on the ball effectively for months afterwards. It's something that fascinates me, how we learn and improve against how we'd like to improve. I remember a colleagues son started playing a lot when he was about 13/14 he was a 28 handicapper when he started and within 2/3 years was off plus 4. He was a golf fanatic and played so much golf through the summer holidays. He didn't get formal instruction until he got into the England youth set up.
@BrisGolf
@BrisGolf 18 күн бұрын
@@robertcourt8593 Let me throw my two cents in the conversation. I think the getting better thought is okay if the swing flaw/flaws aren't massive. Some swing flaws will not let you improve, i.e. and bad grip with a wide open club face. To your discussion about getting lessons and getting worse, sadly there are bad golf instructors that can't fix anyone. But that doesn't mean that all golf instruction will make you worse. Finding an instructor that can work with you is important. As too David's points about the technique vs skill, he is dead on. The key to playing better golf is finding a way to keep the ball in play off the tee at a reasonable distance. Be able to control your approach shots so they are within an acceptable distance from the hole/green. Then be able to chip and putt really well. Then have a great plan for your golf course and stick to your plan. Always play to your strengths and away from your weaknesses. Thanks for the great question.

David, I’ve been fighting this lag holding issue for a while. Too many videos talk about the lag but not about the dangers of holding on excessively. For me it was causing more slice because it was a massively late club head. It also caused hooks as you could imagine. Not only that but I was hurting my left forearm. The release pattern is easy to understand and very helpful as a guide. Really great video buddy!

Hi John, that's fantastic, you've been achieving this in your downswing. What you need to do is feel like your entire left side, meaning knee, hip, left side of your stomach and shoulder are opening up to stop it going left. Not to make it too complicated, but you might need to feel some more shaft lean and impact, which means the grip arrives to the ball before your club does. I will make more videos on this in future, and hopefully you can get it sorted.

wouldn't it be easier to just turn the lead foot in? then the heel will shift out naturally or would that restrict the backswing to much?
@dlgolftips
@dlgolftips Ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. Yes, you could do that. The problem is it won't change the movement of the foot in the downswing and it won't limit the backswing but actually would limit body rotation on the throughswing, which can be quite problematic. As I mentioned in the video, I wouldn't expect anybody to play golf with this move, but as a drill it can just give you a sensation of how that foot should be moving inside your shoe.

Hi Matthew. Thanks for your comment. Glad the drill helped you. In terms of me taking 8 minutes to get to the point, that is how I structure my videos as I like to point out the reasons for doing the drill first so that people don't try the drill if it's not relevant to them. Far too many people scroll through reels, maybe on Instagram, see a quick tip and immediately add it to their game and it might not be for them then they move onto the next quick tip. It's how I teach also. I explain the reasons for doing something before doing it.

Hi Brian Thanks for the comment That's an interesting thing, My head jumps straight to where you're striking it on the clubface. If it feels like it's twisting all over the place, and you don't have control. It's likely not hit from the center If it's hit from the toe, it's twisting open if it's hit from the heel. It's twisting closed. You'll usually feel this in your hands almost like the grip is slipping. Maybe you are familiar with some of that
