This really was insane. Talk about an overachiever, victor estrella burgos is one of the greatest underdog stories in tennis history. He found a place that suited his game perfectly. The altitude of quito made his shots and game far more effective and he knew it. He worked super hard before that tournament every year to give himself the best chance of winning it and he pulled off the three peat. I think 2017 was the craziest one but all of them were seriously insane runs considering the lack of ability and talent this guy had. What he lacked in those he made up for in heart and pure effort. After he won his third quito title in a row he also won his home tournament in the form of a challenger in santo domingo, dominican republic, and he treated that win like a grand slam. Such a humble, legendary player who perhaps maximised his ability better than any other player in history. 3 atp finals, 3 career titles and all in a row at the same venue! Incredible Even in his last apppearance in quito before finally losing there in the second round he still managed to beat Belluchi for the fourth time in a row in four quito tournaments between 2015 and 2018. Lol.

I don't care how many grand slams any other woman has, Martina at her best was better than all of them. By a mile, honestly. Her volley skills were just astounding, no other female player ever was close. She could end points quickly like no other. The fact that she was left handed gave her whole game an artistic flair that was unmatched.

Not true. She created angles with both back and forearm. Even McEnroe agrees with this. If height was this important, Venus and Sharapova would be ace at it

Austin's serve is the slowest and shortest ball you're going to get from her in the entire point. It's shocking that she was able to win two slams....over Chris and Martina nonetheless....with that serve.

I think Edberg's backhand is the best not only for his generation but he is not quite as powerful as say Becker or Wawarinka, but it is a shot he rarely framed, he was in the ready position so well when he launched into that backhand, his sliced best hand is as good as any you will likely to see. He can lob well, dink and angled it well, there is just so much variety that he had with this shots. There is a little wonder that Edberg prefer his own backhand over Federer's, his backhand has as much variety as Federer but the overall technic is better.

On paper he had the weapons but his biggest one, his serve is less potent on the slower clay courts compared to his favourite surface, grass. I think he didn't have the patience to grind it from the baseline against the clay court specialists.

Martina was so arrogant from 84-86. I think she expected the wins and didn’t appreciate them , Graf humbled her and Martina became a better person much in the way Martina humbled Chris. Chris became a better person through her rivalry with Martina, a better person and a better player.

Martina always a whiner and poor sport when opponent outplayed her. Also hate when she applauded with her racquet mostly her own shots! Happy Hana won
@guyinsf
@guyinsf Күн бұрын
Martina was known for physically acknowledging her opponents' winners by applauding with her racket more than anyone else and when she banged her hand really fast repeatedly after hitting a winner she's not applauding herself, she's trying to psych herself up and this usually happened when she was behind or playing against a tough opponent. I really think you're taking this out of context and completely turned it 180 in your analysis. However I do agree with you with her being a whiner but being a whiner is not poor sportsmanship, that's just a personality trait some players have but this behavior is never directed towards opponents. Bad handshakes, dirty stares, stalling or badmouthing others are things that I would say disrespectful to your opponent.

He was an adequate clay court player until 1997. Won the Davis Cup final for the US in 1995 against Russia, won the Italian Open in 1994, had wins on the surface over Muster, Courier and Bruguera. He reached the quarters of the RG three years in a row from 1992-94, the semis in 96, and played two great matches in 97 before getting food poisoning. And then 1998 came, and it was like the bottom dropped out. He won three matches at the RG over the next five years.

Because coaches all teach kids to play two-handers: it works better for kids who don't have the physicality for a single-hander. Promising kids and their parents want results quickly - they don't have the patience to wait for the kids to develop strength.

Just comparing this match and Martina in 1984, it's striking how much Martina had bulked up physically here. She seemed to stay like that until around the end of 1986, after which she seemed to really lose a lot of that muscle.

One wonders how good Edberg could have been if he'd had a better forehand. But definitely one of the greatest serve volleyers ever. I remember when he beat Courier in the 91 US Open final was one of the best displays of serve volley tennis I've ever seen! Serve volley virtually extinct now in the men's game

I would love to see how a serve and volleyer would do against the service returns we have now. It used to be a given that they would win Wimbledon, but I'm not too sure anymore. The courts play a lot slower than they did in the 90s and there's no such thing as carpet anymore. On hardcourts no way. The guys absolutely crush the second serve returns.

For me Hana was the most graceful female player ever. When she was in form her tennis was a thing of beauty. She would glide effortlessly around the court and could hit winners from both wings and had a beautiful single handed backhand. She was an all court player and had all the shots. Only the most talented can make tennis look effortless. In this match you can often hear Martina grunt from effort (not the fake grunts they have these days) but Hana was always quiet and composed. Sure Martina's career was more successful but if you ask me whose talent and game I would prefer, it would be Hana's.

I agree completely. The narrow range of shots in tennis now, and the lack of touch or finesse, is very depressing. There's another player that fits your spot-on description of grace, and complete command of the art of tennis: Evonne Goolagong.
