1. It makes more sense to start investigating volume decline by product type / customer segment -> This way you don't have to look at the entire market at your market analysis 2. If margin stayed constant, revenue decline can only be driven by volume reduction since prices must be steady

The overall market analysis is unnecessary at this point. It should be focused first on the company - its revenue from government and conglomerates (# of furnaces sold, # of clients)

hypothesis-led approach 0:32 the learning mode. you should take an active role to answer the interview before listening to our answer. 0:46 simulate a real case environment 1:55 furnace 熔爐 2:31 or builds the furnace and operates it on behalf of local government. 2:13 - 2:46 situation 2:50 do you mind if i ask some clarification questions before i dive into first questions. 3:50 the first step of interview. 4:08 ask upfront first: whether it is an industry-wide or company-specific problem. 4:20 also good to clarify what metric you are expected to focus on. 4:29 the interviewer might want you to investigate a more general problem but not said explicitly. 4:37 if the company's revenue are decreasing, it is either because the market size is decreasing or market share is decreasing or both. 4:51 overall market size and company market share 5:35 We should therefore look at whether there were any changes in the mix of waste processing methods used or whether any new regulations might change the outlook for waste incineration. 6:14 we should look at the average price of the furnace. 7:55 convert leads to contracts 8:00 turnover 營業額,又稱營業收入、營收 8:01 we need to understand why this occur 8:09 if the company changes the price structure and why? 8:54 I'd like to make two points here, for profitability and revenue cases. 9:05 help you quickly decide: whether the problem is company-specific or industry-wide 9:10 switchgear - 開關設備;交換設備 9:26 hypothesis-driven method is also called root-cause finding: why is situation happening? 10:36 let me cross out the price and dig further into the decline in numbers of orders. do we have any numbers for the market share. this would help us determine whether the missed orders go to competitors or the clients just don't have any demand now. 11:02 the way business works is the company answers RfP: requests for proposals. 11:44 i now therefore would like to look at the other side of the framework. 11:59 it shows that you have a clear process in mind to get to the answer. 12:11 whether the order the company didn't get went to the competitor. 12:18 this can be done physically on a paper.
@judyl.78112 жыл бұрын
2:09 situation question: a business problem and which you will specifically help with. 2:47 framework question: should be well-structured and cover the key area 3:28 test your ability to find the root-cause of an issue in a structured way 3:35 the best is to use a hypothesis-led approach 3:44 your first initial hypothesis is the profit issue is driven by revenues. you would then investigate the revenue side of your framework to identify if that is where the root cause. 3:56 once you have agreed on a framework with your interviewer and explored it. They will often provide you data, in forms of texts, charts, or tables. 4:10 Quant-data provided to test your data interpretation and math skills. 4:24 What do you think, the revenue based on the data available in this table. 4:32 to understand if that's where the profit issue is coming from. 5:04 in addition to quantitative question, you have quality question to test the creativity. 5:26 Now we know that the profit decline is driven by a decrease in numbers of SUV sold, what are some of the ideas you have to turn this situation around? 5:41 recommendations as final deliverable.

Correct me if I am wrong but at 2:15 you mention that the total revenue is 36M = Mkt Share * 1.2B, but the question asks for the Margin NOT Revenue, so you need to multiply by the Profit Margin of 35% to get to 12.6M. Answer A not B.
@Nur-hi4kn2 жыл бұрын
If you multiply 35% by 1.2b the answer would be 42million usd ?
@123Sander12313 жыл бұрын
In your framework you did not consider that output might have been decreased as a consequence of i.e. production issues, which would be a valid reason why revenue has gone down (20 isntead of 21 produced units).

@Igotanoffer4 жыл бұрын
Hey Johny The candidate in the video is what we would describe as a "best-in-class candidate". Your aim should be to do as well as he does. In reality, you can get an offer even if you perform less well than he does. Your answers should still be similar to his. But it's ok if you're a bit slower and less comprehensive than he is. Does that help? Max

Wouldn’t it also matter how many people in france do have access to internet connection in 2000? Also, would people really choose to go for online shopping? Because client is assuming that customers only visit store for shopping and do not really visit stores for “outing” purpose. Lastly, impulse purchase in store could also be dampened due to limited view of items online. Let me know if I’m thinking in right direction?
@griffitheternity49083 жыл бұрын
Agree - how many people have internet access does matter, but is captured in the framework when exploring “number of customers” Online shopping and e commerce is successful in many industries and countries, not just for grocery. While some go for outing, others want to prioritise convenience or maybe someone who is disabled/elderly can’t travel
@griffitheternity49083 жыл бұрын
Good point on impulse purchased being dampened - I’d counter by saying algorithms can pair items / complimentary goods with a pop up “often bought together”, eg if you buy soft drink it might auto suggest potato chips, so you can enhance/engineer impulse buys. But this is ahead of 2000 tech for sure

1. McKinsey prompts tend to provide more information in my experience. 2. I didn’t hear a hypothesis (explicitly or implicitly).
@Igotanoffer6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, That's an interesting comment on hypotheses! We actually don't recommend using a hypothesis unless it really adds value. In real life, most consultants only use a hypothesis when they need to find the root cause of an issue (e.g. why profits are going down? Hypothesis: costs going up). In these cases hypotheses are helpful because they enable you to test different scenarios one by one. But we find that using a hypothesis when solving open ended problems (e.g. what new products should we launch? Hypothesis: red and blue t-shirts) does not really help that much. We've written more about this here in case you are interested: igotanoffer.com/pages/bcg-case-interview#bcg-case Regarding the length of the prompt, the case in the video is actually a case that was used by McKinsey a few years ago. The length of the prompt varies!
@gzZZZ5 жыл бұрын
@@Igotanoffer Personally, I think it's also proper and helpful to formulate a hypothesis for open-ended questions. In the example you presented, after you analyze everything in your framework, what are you going to recommend? So what is the so what? Just getting an understanding of economics? I think you eventually will give your 2 cent to the CEO on whether to go online or not right?
@Igotanoffer5 жыл бұрын
@justiceng2 Thanks for chipping in! Yes you could use a hypothesis in an open-ended case too if you feel that helps you progress through the case, but it's really not necessary in our experience. At the end of the case you can still give a strong recommendation to the CEO without having used a hypothesis throughout. One final comment is that using a hypothesis from the beginning of the case is a little artificial. At the beginning of a case a hypothesis is just a "wild guess" as we don't have much information at all. So if you want to use a hypothesis we would advise using one only once you find out a bit more about the situation and can offer an educated hypothesis rather than a wild guess. Hope that helps!
