Steven Universe was one of the first cartoons that made me invested enough to join fandom spaces for the first time, which after a while led me to start watching anime. In a way, without it I probably wouldn't have found such gems like Madoka Magica or Made in Abyss. Anyways, great AMV! I like your editing. (Btw, I also made a Madoka AMV about a year ago, if you're interested)

First of all I appreciate and admire the courage you had to openly share your feelings about philosophy with us in that intro. I love that, thank you❤ Swcondly, I could talk about philosophy and Madoka all day anyday, as Madoka is one of my top shows of all time. So thank you for making this video, I will savor it to it's fullest extent❤

I'd almost given up hope on finding a Homura/Rebellion analysis video that wasn't a fecal abortion. I am so happy and impressed to finally, after ten years, have a video I can point to as someone who understands the source and respect the themes. Nice to see critical analysis isn't as dead in the fandom as I had feared. Well done.

Found this video linked on I _think_ Reddit, and have had it saved in my Watch Later for the last few days. Seriously, thank you for this, it's so refreshing. I can't believe that so many fans of a show that explicitly makes a point to reject black and white morality keep falling into it. The philosophical lens you bring has given a contextual framework for many of the things I've picked up on but struggled to articulate concisely. Your friends were very right to suggest you upload your musings ♥ (P.S. the memes were delightful, lol. Glad to see someone else noticed the parallel between Madoka's conversation with her mother and Homura's decision to remake reality as a silver cage to protect her.)

The way this essay has shaken me to my CORE. I couldn’t love this show more. Homura, they could never make me hate you.😭 With the upcoming movie hastening us towards the end of their story, I wonder how it will all turn out. I’m scared but hopeful too. I appreciate your memes and knowledge of the hidden in plain sight things I couldn’t understand before. Thank you so much!!! ♥️

I love this essay so much. I think ever since I saw the original series to me Homura came off as an absurdist hero. Watching this felt like seeing my own thoughts crystalized and expressed clearly. You did me a great favor in not having to make this essay myself. I cried multiple times, this captured a lot of what I love about the show. Thank you

I don’t know if you will see this since I’m very late to the party, but this is one of the best analyses I have ever witnessed on anything and I’m shocked it’s not more popular. I recently finished the series and rebellion and I really felt a need for explanation because I knew that Homura wasn’t evil, and that something wasn’t clicking in my brain. Tying Homura’s actions back to several EXTREMELY EARLY things in the movie, and even the scene with Madoka and her mother is so heartwarming because it helps me understand this character a lot better. The constant symbolism with the pomegranates, the lyrics of the dolls, the dolls themselves, all explaining wordlessly in little bits of their own affect on Homura and symbolism of her true feelings. All the quotes taken truly do tie expertly into your psychological analysis, which is something I personally can they enough of and love to see how people take it on. It was nice to see a few hints of comedy here and there in between your amazing tone for a lot of this. I think the final conclusion boils down to this: Homura is a girl who truly didn’t believe in herself, or much else. She got her first kindness from Madoka which sparked something in her, but not quite enough. That was when she was led astray by the witch that Madoka and Mami saved her from. This is what sparked true love (regardless of what kind) in Homura. She still had that timidity in her soul however, which is why the end of the first timeline forced her to watch her only love die in front of her, with her believing it was all her fault for being to cowardish to make a contract. So she made a wish out of pure desire for the one she loved. (Btw people calling it selfish makes no sense to me because, when it comes down to it, she’s doing it all for Madoka, and really just Madoka. People can’t see it as selfishness because it’s truly not a black and white issue as you said) She goes back in time, and she believes she is able to help Madoka as Madoka helped her. However, it all ends once again when Walpurgisnacht arrives. She repeats this cycle again and again, suffering more each time, and making Madoka more likely to become a magical girl as well due to her power growth. One of the timelines even forced her to be sacrificed by Madoka just to go back and do it again, after promising she would save her. The anime timeline is when she puts on a neutral and colorless facade to drill the idea of Madoka not becoming a magical girl through serious means, even going as far as to threaten to murder Sayaka to save her from acting drastic and making a contract. (My favorite scene where I found out who Homura was is when she broke down on the bench telling Madoka to “realize there are people who care about her” which is what made me understand who she was.) In the final moment, she says it’s worse, and Madoka refutes that saying how it’s ok, she will always be with her, and that she’s happy. Homura was fooled by this, and didn’t have the guts to stop Madoka then, forcing her to fly off into godhood. Her journey of the loss of faith she experienced wasn’t because she just didn’t believe in Madoka, she didn’t believe in the Goddess Madoka. The world wasn’t what she would have wanted and she was truly suffering for it anyways, which Homura hates herself for not stopping when she has the chance. She lets herself fall into despair as one final attempt. When she is rescued by Madoka however, she doesn’t hesitate. She refuses to let Madoka suffer any more and takes her goddess powers away, and creates a reborn world where she can live out her wish: to meet Madoka again and to protect her as a girl, not a goddess. She believes this action was unforgivably sinful, calling herself “evil” and “a demon” which is what some of the audience chose to believe. Believing Homura here is misunderstanding everything the team sought out to achieve. In the true end, she is doing all of this out of the 15th doll’s incarnation, LOVE. It was all because of love, which truly is a madness. One that Homura had ever since she was first saved by Madoka and Mami. This is truly her wish coming true and she isn’t in the wrong. She is flawed, which is what makes her so human, but she isn’t wrong, evil, and certainly not a demon. Holy hell that was a lot of writing, but that’s my understanding. I too believe she will be redeemed in the final installment this winter. I genuinely want you to understand just how unbelievably amazing you are for dissecting all of this. I wouldn’t have been able to discover who Homura REALLY was and how she truly is showing us all what *love* is. This has solidified Puella Magi Madoka Magica as my favorite anime ever, and like you, it has ruined my life 🥲. Thank you for this video. Your ADHD 2-year journey is also very relatable to me lmao. Subbed and liked. Great Done. Well Job. (P.S. Homura absolutely is best girl. I have my best girl, but she is best girl for all time.)
