It's interesting to come to this video 6 years later, and comparing the open-source or free options (e.g. Blender) with what was out there. Stuff like Houdini and Nuke have survived the test of time. While the Adobe suite is still obviously in heavy use, it's been interesting to see people pushing back not only against Adobe's licensing model but also the stability & functionality of the programs in the suite compared to their alternatives.

I'm so motiivated! I'm currently a Product Designer (designing web and mobile apps) but love editing and want to be a VFX artist and be part of movies like Avatar etc or any Disney/Pixar movies. But I'm 40. Is it too late to change fields knowing how competitive it is out there?

It's never too late! There are no rules to this and you can jump in whenever you feel you're ready. It is a very competitive field but so long as you're willing to put the work in and push through the early stages, it'll all work out. Persistence, a willingness to learn and a drive to be better with every project are the keys to a prosperous career.

I've been using fusion studio for about a year. I'm feeling very comfortable with its node-based system. I changed some settings in fusion to make it feel more like nuke. (Vertical node flow, snappier pipe grab distance, neutral grey background) Would it be more valuable for me to learn the vfx concepts in fusion, then move to nuke? Or should I just move over to nuke right now and learn vfx concepts? I have the foundry educational license for now, which took me a while to get.

For anyone who tried this and it still doesn't work, change render device from GPU to CPU. Unfortunately with GPU rendering this specific method doesn't work, although if someone has a method for that let us know!
