Its funny how Hancocks ideas have fueled opposite agendas by giving credit to ancient aliens for every large structure outside of Europe on one side and providing the basis for many of the beliefs of Hoteps on the other side. He may be a pseudoscientist, but you can't say his ideas aren't infectious

Yes but that is of course down to the classic issue where real academics are burdened with boring and rigorous processes, while Hancock's """"""journalism""""" can essentially weave any novel idea it wants that is appealing without that regard. We actually have an entire form of media based on just such a pile of attractive ideas mostly unburdened with rigorous facts, it is called "entertainment".

I think the idea of a more down to earth and relatable everyman type protagonist for this series can work… the problem though is that Garrod exists and does the entire concept better. In fact X is basically the better ZZ. It’s a more lighthearted show about a scrappy street kid trying to survive who starts out selfish but changes after running into the Gundam along with a girl that he has to save. Tiffa and her relation to Garrod is basically a far better and more tasteful version of puru/Leina… really people should just watch X more lol

Why no mention of Gulver's Travels Lapūta.
@argonbolt
@argonbolt 2 күн бұрын
@@aaronatherton7431 because Laputa isn't really a good parallel to Atlantis. It's an allegorical city but beyond that it's a different allegorical city entirely. Miyazaki's Laputa is the closest but that's an interpretation of Laputa not Gulliver's Laputa.

@argonbolt
@argonbolt 2 күн бұрын
@@aaronatherton7431 Yes I am very aware of the details of Gulliver's Lapute, but the allegory in question beyond having a king and a magic device wasn't really the same as Atlantis. Atlantis's original allegory as I said in the video is the hubris of military tyranny and expansion by overly passionate people who lose grace with the gods as a subtle criticism of Athens. Laputa on the other hand is a critical allegory about England. About how English intellectualism literally made them disconnected with reality and the ground. Many of their endeavors are highly intelligent (arts, sciences etc) but are functionally impractical as you mentioned. This by extension is also where Balnibarbi the country Laputa rules over comes in as a metaphor for Ireland. It is in detail not really 1-1 with Laputa as the Laputians are not really a violent conquering people in the "Warlike men" Greek warrior sense Plato was motioning towards, and are more of a critique of technocrats or perhaps in modern times what we dislike in Silicon Valley tech billionaire types. Only in the works of Miyazaki are Plato's former and Swift's latter blended to noteworthy amounts.

I knew that about this bogus comparison even before I heard of Kimba. Reading those articles, I always got a sensation that none of those people had read Verne to begin with. I personally think that even if a piece of art/entertainment is indeed a "rip-off", this isn't an interesting perspective or position for discussion or analysis, and besides, most of those who scream "plagiarism" left and right, don't seem to even understand what the term inclines. By that logic I could make a case that the MGS's genetically modified soldiers and the Patriots' AI were ripped off from Votoms, while ignoring everything else that differentiates those two properties. There are very few instances of true plagiarism that I can think of, and once again, looking on them from this sole perspective is pretty boring as it downplays the unique qualities added by the plagiarists (just look at Nosferatu). ALSO! Random things you probably should've mentioned: That's one interview where Okada reveals that Grandis is a prostitute. That's one Twitter post were Sadamoto admitted that making Nadia black was a very controversial decision at the time, they had to really push to the NHK executives which deemed it unprofitable for the local market. That's one interview where Takeda and Yamaga had a meltdown over Disney's Atlantis. They blamed NHK lack of legal action on fear of Disney's wealth. Contrary to their position, there were plethora of cases of Disney losing in court especially in the early 2000s (even in cases with the outcome of which I personally don't agree on such as W.I.T.C.H. vs Winx). Disney 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a considered in an NHK meeting before the production of Nadia even begun as stated in another Okada interview (the other Okada interview and this one are both on freeex in Japanese only). The fact that Nadia popularized the term "Island" episodes in Japan, which (as anime terms go) is somewhat parallel to the western "filler". I honestly don't know if there was any equivalent term used by the Japanese beforehand. Interestingly enough, the idea of them taking place on an Island, seems to come from that one episode from the OG Gundam show. You should've mentioned that Nautilus Cut thing. A lot of people still seems to believe it was made by Anno (even though it wasn't). I still consider its fan-made recreations to be the best way to revisit the show.

@argonbolt
@argonbolt 4 күн бұрын
No there has not been "Intellectual Property" before modern capitalism. It is quite literally in the name. The first copyrighted work only goes back to 1710 with the Statue of Anne, you don't get copyright before you get mass introduction of printing presses which let you literally word for word copy the print. Earlier laws had no way of being enforced when each book or manuscript had to be manually copied person to person. Before industrialization(which also saw the rise of capitalist related industries and mass production, you know like of books) there also wasn't a literate middle class who could consume huge amounts of media like we do today, most stories were told by word of mouth which was even less friendly to modern ideas of "Intellectual Property". There were stories, stories are not "IP" no one "Owned the intellectual property rights" of Gilgamesh, or Beowulf or the Greek philosophical texts or King Arthur etc. These were stories created and reproduced and modified constantly over time, re-contextualized and transformed. No one "owned" them beyond existing to certain times or places. Chrétien de Troyes did not have to pay royalties to the estate of Geoffrey of Monmouth for using the Arthurian legends. To think otherwise is completely ahistorical and false.
