What do you about using a piece of hardwood to scrape around the edge of the marker. It wouldn't scratch the stone. I was 8 years old when that man died.
@theyfaceeast

The primary objective to keep in mind when cleaning headstones is Do No Harm. I use wooden paint stir sticks and tongue suppressors for scraping thick accumulation off natural stone. The safest thing is to use tools that are not made of metal. I personally use metal tools around the edges of stones, but I am keenly aware of the risks and I move the tools slowly and deliberately to Do No Harm. I have received numerous recommendations from viewers who use various types of tools made out of wood or plastic that work well for them. So just use good judgement and always maintain a mindset of Do No Harm.

WE THE PEOPLE need to reflect more on the value of life and less on living it without care. Many died for their country since 1776. It is not enough to remember once a year. Today there are too many who take life for granted and do not appreciate those who made it possible for them. HISTORICAL FACTS ARE IMPORTANT. WE ALL KNOW, IF WE IGNORE HISTORY, WE WILL BE CONDEMNED TO REPEAT IT!

@@theyfaceeast Americans have become so complacent because we've lost our culture to Corporations and government programs that are too low effort to benefit society. Our education system doesn't teach any practical life skills, and we're just expected to supplement our education with our parents' parenting, but in the modern age, everybody's too stuck to their phones to give anybody the time of day or a single care in the world. Sometimes I cry when I realize how fucked this world is nowadays; We do not need to survive anymore, we just have to exist. I know I'm complacent and I do not believe I could do the same things young men my age did back then, but that's also because I didn't grow up needing the same life skills. In corporate America, there is only respect for the self, but respect towards the self without respect towards others is not respect, it is ego, devilry. American society is built on sweatshop labor from foreign countries so we can have lavish lifestyles, while corporations steal water from natives with smiles on their faces and lies from their lips.

As Americans, as a people, we have a sacred obligation to go to the far reaches of the world to retrieve our Soldier Dead. We will literally spend more than $1,000,000 to find, identify, and repatriate one fallen member of our Armed Forces. But somehow, the issue of reverent perpetual care for our veteran graves fell through the cracks. We spend untold billions of dollars for all kinds of nonsensical activities, so we have no excuse for our veteran headstones covered in filth. I am making it an issue. Eventually, all Americans will recognize this as a top priority issue.

A volunteer must obtain permission from the cemetery steward prior to performing any work within the cemetery grounds. I have a video on this channel explaining how to go about obtaining permission. I started this movement in response to the City of Fort Myers, FL accusing me of trespassing in response to my phone call seeking guidance on how to go about obtaining permission to clean veteran headstones within the city's segregated African American cemetery. I alerted the local NBC News affiliate and they immediately ran a story on it on the local evening news broadcast. That was my first stand for veteran headstone cleaning. Provided the volunteer is following the best practices protocol issued by the National Cemetery Association, there is no good excuse for a cemetery steward to deny permission. But I tell volunteers to just move on to another cemetery in your county, and then another, to demonstrate proficiency. Then go back to the cemetery steward who originally denied you permission.

Graves of veterans should be maintained by the government of the country where they are buried. Isn't it crazy that veterans have to come from America to maintain war graves in a European country? Kings and rich people lie in mausoleums with thousands of kilos of marble on top and this young man, who gave his life for our freedom at the age of 23, lies under a grass mat with a concrete tile on it. In this case, shame on us is an understatement...

Danke für Ihren Dienst I think it's great that the young soldier's grave has been restored. The way America treats its veterans is also an example for Germany. Comrades who were wounded in Afghanistan still have to fight for treatment, including psychological treatment. This is what a 72-year-old captain in the German army reserve wrote. I'm just doing what I feel God asked me to do. I'm not sure why he chose me for this task, but I will do my best. It is a hard row to hoe, but I believe we can get to a place where Americans show respect for our veterans of the past. America literally goes to the ends of the earth to retrieve our fallen warriors, identify them, and repatriate their sacred remains back to their hometown cemetery. In some cases more than $1,000,000 is spent during the process of bringing an American Warrior home. But then we do nothing, not one penny, to provide perpetual care for the veteran's final resting place. This will soon change.

I think these flat grave markers are awful; multitudes of them DO disappear after overgrowth of dirt and grass, weeds, etc. The so-called "perpetual care" contracts are a false sense of comfort. Once the memorial park is full, it is usually abandoned and municipalities are left to tend them; most do a poor (or worse) job of grounds upkeep. 😢
