How to make a sprite of different size images
@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo 3 ай бұрын
I recommend having most sprites be the same size, or maybe up to 2 or 3 different sizes if really needed... But if you have multiple sized sprites, you'll want different sprite sheets for each size. Each sprite sheet should contain only one size of sprites in a grid, so they can be rotated through and make a smooth animation. - When you want to create a new image, open Gimp and click file > new. Then choose the width and height you want. Remember to expand 'Advanced Options' and change the 'Fill With' to 'Transparency' if you'd like the normal transparent background of sprites. Then click 'Okay'.

As a general rule I would work on different layers as much as possible for anything important. Make sure you're on the correct layer and that the layer you're working on isn't hidden underneath another layer and you might not realize it. In other words, you might not have active focus on what you think. Any selection you have made including a text selection, you can apply an affect to. If this doesn't answer your question, let me know what steps you are taking from the beginning of the process.

If you want more control, you can create your image exactly how you like at the true size you will use, editing pixel by pixel. If you're okay with less control, You can use resizing of different resolutions to get the pixelated look you want.

Make sure you're clicked on the correct layer in the layer tab when you are creating your selection. Once you create the selection, you can cut it out by pressing Ctrl + x, then paste it back with Ctrl + v. At this point, you will see it on a 'floating layer' in the layers tab. Then go to 'Layer' --> 'To New Layer' or use Shift + Ctrl + n. Now your newly cut out selection is on its own independent layer. Select the move tool and you can move it where you like.

Coming from a Photoshop background here; is there a way to move a layer on only one axis in Gimp? In Photoshop, you hold down shift while having an active selection and it will lock it to the axis that you are dragging parallel to.
@timbosinfo

The way I do that is to use either the horizontal guide or the vertical guide. The way to do that is (1) click on the ruler on the left of your template or the one above your template. (2) after clicking, hold and drag it to the position on your template you want. (3) click on the layer you want to move and move it to your guide. When you get close, the layer will snap to your guide wherever you previously placed it on your template.

Hi there. Thank you so much for this channel, it is the best one so far. There are only a handful of tasks that I use Gimp for and I am down to learning where the last one is. I am an artist and I am using Blur, Value or Grayscale, Rule of Thirds grid and Threshold. The only task I can not see how to accomplish so far is to map a palette of colors from an uploaded image and export it. If you would give me some pointers or maybe you have a video that shows this, I would appreciate your help.
@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo 9 ай бұрын
I am glad the channel is helping you. That is great about your art. Mostly, what I do with color change is by using the color picker tool and getting the exact color I need. Then I make a 'selection' and 'fill with' the color I want. Essentially I redo the image, doing this. Basically, I will have blank transparent layers above the original image, and redo everything like the text and other graphics. The other thing that I do is basic color correction. You can select the entire layer and make color corrections or you can use the different select tools and select portions one at a time from an existing image, and then go to the 'colors' option in the upper menu. I think I will need to make a tutorial about color correcting techniques. If you are color matching or want a different color scheme, here are some quick instructions to get you started experimenting: (1)Open a copy of an image you want to adjust colors on with Gimp. (2) Select -> All (3) Colors -> Hue/Saturation. (4) first work in 'Master' which is selected automatically by default. Start by moving the 3 different sliders left and right to see what happens with your picture. The 3 sliders are labeled: 'Hue', 'Lightness', and 'Saturation'. From there you can adjust the R,G,B, C,M, or Y color channels by selecting that radio button (the six color options surrounding the master), and adjust the 3 sliders from there until you are happy.

@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo 9 ай бұрын
It all depends. Each job is a little different. It sounds like you have an existing single layer image with text on it. If you don't have the original image, you can sometimes use tools like the clone tool to remove the original text and make the picture look like it originally did without the text. If that is not possible, you can cover it with other graphics and text, sort of like someone covering an unwanted tattoo with another larger more bold one that they now prefer. Hiding it essentially.

It's tough to know what's going on without watching everything you do leading up to that. It sounds like it's not allowing the option of bucket fill, which may mean that you've skipped a step or are not on the right layer you are trying to color fill into. Sometimes, this will also happen if you need to invert your selection. You can try that by going to 'select --> invert'.

Anyway to unmerge layers that are merged into one layer in an existing file?
@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo Жыл бұрын
Once you've merged the layers, they are one new layer. If you just merged them within this session, you can 'edit -> undo' (or ctrl + z) as many times as needed to work backwards in your steps. The ideal way to handle all this is to be organized by 'saving as' along the way in your project. Store as many .xcf files as you need so you can make sure you have originals of everything you might need later. Or save the individual layers as .png files in your project folder so you can import it into any project later for use.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by files, so I will take a guess and you can clarify if you are asking something different. If you have extra layers including text layers in your layers tab, you can delete them by right clicking on the layer and selecting 'delete layer'. Also, if you just did it, you can undo the mistake with edit -> undo or Control + z on Windows.

Hi, thanks for this. Also, I wanted to add multiple superhero character images that overlap each other like a collage. Do i have to create multiple layers for that? or.... Thanks
@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo Жыл бұрын
I would have everything on a separate layer, unless I was confident I would never edit them separately again. I would get into the habit of having tons of layers for everything including individual textures. Keep that as your primary Gimp .XCF file saved so you can go back in whenever and make changes. Sometimes, I'll make a copy of the primary .XCF file if I want to 'merge down' with a lot of my layers together for a final piece, but I have the original still that I can go in and edit anything on its own layer.

'Canvas' doesn't mean anything in Gimp. I will try and guess what you are meaning and you can clarify. It seems you are opening Gimp new and then pasting in a picture. Instead, I would right click on the picture on your desktop and select 'open with' and choose Gimp. Sometimes, if you have previously done that, you can right click on the picture and select something like ''edit with gimp'. That will automatically open your picture on the right sized template.

How do I edit text after it has been written and no longer highlighted?
@timbosinfo
@timbosinfo Жыл бұрын
There are a few things. First it's best to keep your original text layer in your layer stack unless you are sure you won't need it again. If you do this, you can just double click on the original layer anytime and continue editing it. If you have no editable text layer anymore, the next high resolution way to edit, is to make a new identical text one layer above the existing text, and edit that instead. For example, you can create identical text exactly above the existing text so it is hiding the original text from view, and then 'select by color' that new text, then make the new text layer invisible by clicking the Eye icon next to your layer in the layer stack. Then you are able to edit within your text selection. Create more blank layers if you want to seperate details, like a text outline layer, a color fade layer for the text's base color, a couple of texture layers, etc.
