My sister grates them & freezes, then uses them to make zucchini muffins, zucchini jam, and zucchini chocolate cake, as well as adding some to various casseroles to increase nutrition. As for your dogs, have you tried cooking the veg? My parents used to grill winter squash and the barn cats loved it, but had no interest in eating uncooked squash.

Good idea, never thought of vacuum sealing them. It's just freezer space is high value real estate around here, typically used for nutritionally denser foods. :D Thanks for your comment!

Hello Martin, I love willows and making willow structures, but I have been advised that a living willow arch will damage the foundations of my house, causing subsidence and breaking water pipes. You seem to be an expert, and I have so enjoyed your videos, I wanted your opinion of the matter, considering all your experience. What I have heard from friends has so worried me. Many thanks in anticipation of your reply.
@GardensforLife4 күн бұрын
Hi Linda, thanks for your comment. Planting any tree right next to the house isn't a good idea. I'd simply keep adequate space. I've never had any damage.

You are SO right about not eating garlic right away - I tried one extremely small one while clearing a bed and though I didn't vomit, it was a very close thing. Not fun! I'm curious as to whether I'll get 2 weeks of sun in the winter to cure my Jerusalem artichokes... But let's hope.
@GardensforLife9 күн бұрын
Don't worry, just any daylight at all will do to cure J. artichokes, no need for direct sunlight.

Is elephant garlic a perennial in all climates? We get down to minus 35 F/-37C and our frost line goes down four feet/1 1/4 meters.
@GardensforLife9 күн бұрын
Good question, i believe garlic is very hardy. Though the snow will insulate the ground, so it's much less cold on the surface of the soil.
@arqeph.private10 күн бұрын
The elephant garlic i got from your shop, planted august or september, not sure anymore, but they were massive bulbs, i was completely flabbergasted. And a ton of corms also! So will plant out a lot so i can increase the yield tremendously next year. They taste just a tad bitter when eaten fresh however making sauses or baking them removes almost all if not all, the bitterness. So far i understand you sell a very good strain as i've been told they are normally much more bitter. So, thats all just great!
@GardensforLife9 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Great to hear from you and get feedback. Like with all garlic, the bitterness goes away when you cure it for 1-2 weeks in sunlight.

Very unusual for the wax to get moldy, because it's not food. I would not use it. It's not worth risking it. When storing wax it's probably best to wrap it in clingfilm.

Taking the plunge and going investing in a pretty large polytunnel this year ( thinking 60x18ft ish) I wonder who makes/supplies the best tunnels in Ireland? I want the best my money can buy and I'm unsure who to go with.
@GardensforLife20 күн бұрын
Good question, i'm not sure as i haven't bought a new tunnel for over 20 years. polydome.ie in Birr is a good company. Our tunnel is a similar size 18x7m. I would recommend going with the best quality plastic you can get, i bought the tunnel for as little as 300 second hand, the plastic is 1000 gauge and was 650 euro. Plus brackets, wood and the gutter which was an extra at 300 euro. We've got a video on the gutter too. Here's the tunnel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpuKdphk3tvJZIE.htmlsi=muZ36wDQYks2vsJc&t=2254

I see from your video that your electric fence touches off the ground. I had heard that it was best to keep it off the ground to prevent the current leaking to earth. Am I missing something?
@GardensforLife21 күн бұрын
The fence does earth a bit, this is no harm if you have a plug in energizer or one with a battery and solar panel. If the current is strong enough it will burn the grass off. Hard to prevent it completely, perhaps mow the grass very low every few weeks.

Such incredible sized leaves in such a short time! Your soil is very healthy and happy, in turn providing your family with abundance of health! So great. I just made 6 1x3m garden beds this year and only properly started my compost pile this year, so will be adding a good layer of compost onto them at the end of the season. For now am applying liquid fertilizer and mulching with mowings. Everything is healthy at least, no damage from pests at all.
