One of the motorcity greats that were ahead of their time. I grew up listening to these guys my uncle hung with them before and while they were big and has a bunch of stories of what went on backstages and at parties these guys were hardcore party animals

I would just point out they did not use effects, no wimpy little amp with a fuzz tone or gain control. They would just plug it in and TURN IT UP! When I saw them each guitar and the drummer had 2 Marshal stacks in that little bitty auditorium above the Student Union Grill at Michigan State.

You have to surrender to this high energy type of Rock & Roll (lets face it, those folks in Detroit will always be more pissed-off than you and me). Yes, perhaps its a triumph of attitude over ability - but the chemistry was undeniable with these guys. MC5 was never going to give us a "Strawberry Fields Forever" or anything beyond 4/4 time. Its a different vibe. The problem is that its very hard to maintain this level of energy beyond a few years (just ask the Sex Pistols) - unless you grow into something else; which they had no intention of doing. They got in , made there mark , and got out quickly. Only the drugs remained. I just can't believe this stuff would ever be 45 years old!
@slint698 жыл бұрын
+George Orr Attitude over Ability? I don't Think so. Yes they had a Balls to the Walls Attitude, but they sure had the Ability and Musical Knowledge to Match it. Wayne Kramer is one Hell of a Guitarist with some pretty vicious licks and Rob Tyner had one of the most soulfull voices in Rock. The rest of the band aren't Half Arsed either. How many other bands do you know that were able to merge Jazz and Rock into such an High Energy Mix.

Here's a hilarius story about the E=MC5. The very 1st time i saw these guys was at Boblo island. Anyone from the Detroit and surrounding area will remember that Place!!! A ride up the Detroit River into Canada and then a Very Cool amusement Park built on an island. I wanna say...1966? Boblo had loads of local acts playing at this park at a little BandShell, not far from the wiLdMoUse. I remember watching the MC5 play here with their coats on because it was a freezing spring day. After the set, my 2 Brothers and a close friend of ours went around the side of the stage to talk to the members of the MC5, who happened 2B all together, like the unity Band they were!!! This took some Balls considering we were ages between 10 thru 13 yrs.old. We complimented them on their set of Stones, Chuck Berry, Beatles,Kinks.We were aspiring little Musicians at the time, Launched by the Stones and the Beatles, like the millions they created. They weren't doing any originals at the time. They were so Frickin' Cool to us, until we asked them what MC5 stood for? Someone said More Cannibus 4,5. Another one said More C. NT 4,5 Another, More Cash 4,5 Over and Over it went, with many laughs in between. Finally, Sonic said... where are you guys from? We said Detroit!!! Well you outta be ashamed of yourselves, because the MC is the MOTOR CITY and there's 5 of us!!! On the Boblo Boat ride back Home, these guys set up behind the engines of the boat, where it was super warm and played all the way back to the Docks!!! What a GREAT TIME that was!!!!!! I rarely missed this band when they played around town in later years!! They were so Powerful and Exciting Live, with a sense and aura floating around them, A Truly amazing Band!!!! Till the $$$ and Drugs Ruined IT!!!!!!
@klausrain1116 жыл бұрын
Denny Mcfastlane Wow! Fantastic story! They were definitely a "people's band." But all of that aside, they were ferocious rockers, just in a class by themselves. Few American bands come close. They were having so much fun here, they knew they were kickin it!
