Fletch owned a three-bedroom house in Muswell Hill. He was made. How the hell he got a mortgage when he was in and out of prison is not explained.

I always preferred Porridge to Going Straight. Both series were the best of British Comedy and great acting from Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale.

For anyone who's not sure how big a deal £500 would actually be, I'll just point out that in the year Going Straight was first broadcast (1978), the average annual salary for a full-time worker in the UK was £3,269. So, in other words, Pipers has just offered him a little under one sixth of the average Brit's total income to be lookout. If this was made today, he'd be offering him around 6 and a half grand....I'd have to be scared off it too I reckon 😂😂😂

4.20. Not a sweeping generalization at all, he's spot on. And it's even worse today.

11.20. That manhandling of the daughter. Clever writing, showing that behind the quick quips the jailbird Fletcher was a nasty piece of work.

This was a perfect 6-parter. Tragic that Beckinsale died of course, but I think it ended well here as it achieved what it set out to do. Modern fiction could learn a lot from this simple, well-executed character development and arc for one of sitcom's greatest characters. The comic irony that the prison sitcom was more upbeat and lackadaisical than the more realistic life on the outside where you are your own worst enemy, is just perfection.
