Larry, Some of your pics of Ketchikan brings back memories of what I saw when I was there but what I remember the most was the King Crab Buffett that I enjoyed in the Fish Pirates Saloon right where our ship docked.

@russellkoopman3004 - It is quite the achievement. The tracks are narrower than standard tracks so that they could fit them on the mountain pass easier. Very fun train ride. Thanks for stopping by.

@@LarryLeesBees I noticed that. It seemed to make the cars sway side to side more than normal width tracks. Probably why they don't go very fast.

We were still up north, on our last night of the cruise. The lights were amazing. We had a blast. I did not get to do any fishing this trip, but I’ve done plenty in the past up there for sure!!! 😎 Thanks for stopping by! 😃

@meloneycrews - Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it. These packages and queens were purchased from Tate’s Honey Farm in Millwood. He sold out of packages, but he has new queens in every week all season long.

I assume that you didn’t put a full package into your NUCs, how did you start them?

@kirklandappleby109 - Yes those are full packages. Three pounds of bees, roughly 4 frames of bees. Installed them just as I did with my 8 frame setup.

@kirklandappleby - Hello Sir! Thanks for stopping by! I came spring with 20 hives. And I purchased 7 packages. My 20 hives look amazing and I’ll probably be doing some splits on those this year as well. The packages are purely being used as resource hives to make new comb, build up weaker colonies and such.

LoL!!! I never associated the sound to a seagull, but I can definitely understand how it is similar. Just the sound they make when they are getting ready to hatch and determine location of other queens getting ready to hatch, so the first one out will dispatch the others.

Thankyou for this commentary on the types of hives there are as options. I am doing research on what is most common but it seems preference is what it comes down to. I guess I'll have to build all of the styles to see which one people want the most in my area.

@bobcat3905 - The most common and most used is the Langstroth hive. It is the norm in the northern hemisphere. But yes as you say, it does come down to preference.

Larry, just to set the record straight the south that I live in doesn’t have summer and food for the bees all year round. We were in single digits back in December with windchills well below zero. That doesn’t happen every December but I’m sure it’s warmer than your location. You 8.2 lb swarm is very large. On you easy swarm that’s the way I like them. lol. When I see some like that, I look to see if they’re carrying pollen in, if they are they’re there to stay. Good luck and I hope you have a great season!
