My brother used to have a 1999 Jetta. I found Reverse by trying to downshift into first... and missed. That shifter was seriously sloppy. In contrast, I have a 2015 Mazda 3 with a six-speed manual. Engaging Reverse is the same in a Mazda, but the shifter is much notchier, heftier, and more precise. It would take a bit of concerted effort to accidentally engage Reverse.
