Not only do I know about it, I came up with the idea when I was working as a ski patroller, and dreamed of skiing down the mountain with a base chute as a paraglider. Little did I know that at the exact same time there were people who actually started doing that in Europe instead of just dreaming about it.

A lot of mountains don't have perfect diving boards for wingsuit launches and a lot of wingsuiters that speedfly enjoy both equally. It's all about getting out there and enjoying the thrill (whilst making good decisions 😄)

That must be the slowest way to 'speed fly'. Hang gliding is where real speed is.
@descensionists24 күн бұрын
You may be a little misinformed. Unless you're confusing hang gliding for wingsuiting? But yes, the name "speed" flying is a little cheesy but in the discipline of canopy sports it is the fastest version (under canopy).
@ericoschmitt24 күн бұрын
@@descensionists I am not confusing. Hang gliders can go in excess of 150km/h while actually flying and being able to soar back up. A wingsuit 'falls forward' and can't soar up :)
@descensionists23 күн бұрын
I can't find any information online about hang gliders going THAT fast!! We'd assume with a 50kmh tail wind of sorts?? But hey, all air sports are awesome. We just enjoy the ability to climb up with a tiny magic back pack and have a fun proximity speed rush on the way down 😃
@ericoschmitt23 күн бұрын
@@descensionists no tailwind, that's airspeed! You can see Wolfgang Siess videos, he's probably doing over 120 a lot of the time. Then if you look up Andrea Ghidini landing, one of them has a speedometer hitting 156km/h. Finally, pilot Ryan Voight has registered 188km/h airspeed while exiting a loop, that with a Wills Wing T2 from around 2008 - not the T2C meaning no carbon, and no technora sail. Meaning that a modern hang glider might exit a loop hitting up to 200km/h nowadays if the pilot is on the heavier side and really pulls in for speed. I myself own an older T2 but haven't looped yet, and I'm also lighter, so not all that fast :)

@descensionists24 күн бұрын
It may seem like it looking from the outside in but that's why we spend time forecasting and learning about orography to understand how the winds will move around mountain features. You wouldn't climb a mountain in the first place if conditions were showing inclement weather that produces downdrafts.

I remember being a young man in a Colorado mountain community that participated in high level, high risk mountain sports. We were indestructible, finding ways to do it for a living were evolving, it was the golden years for sure. Now I am 53 and most all of those friends are either dead or in a wheelchair, missing limbs, drooling on their shoulders or worse. I have had more broken bones than years of life, including all the big ones, spine, pelvis, femurs, skull etc. This film is a documentary of a process addiction happening before you. Temporal deference is basically putting more value on instant reward than long term consequences. An opioid junkie knows the potential consequences yet still chases that high until death or intervention. There are many mountain junkies that do the same thing, just with a different drug, the end result is sadly often similar. I traveled the world, had recognition within my field, took hits but remained resilient. Now at 53 my body is badly broken (but mostly functional) with life long scars and damage (frostbite, displaced bones) but what is more challenging is the PTSD or survivors guilt when you are the lucky one and make it through without "punching your ticket". I thought that as long as I was fit, smart and learned from the mistakes I experienced or witnessed, I would get through just fine. I have lost some of the smartest, fittest most experienced so, that is clearly a fallacy I used to deny. Unfortunately, unlike the military community there is no old mountain athlete support system, no sponsor gives a shit about you. Nothing ruins your day like going to your friends family and explaining to them what happened, I know far more widows and widowers than any man should, but that's a bummer to talk about so...... cheers mate!

Park at the Copper Conoco, take a bike ride down the path until you find a spot to swoop one of the ponds with sufficient energy to pop up and land on the path. I flew a whole lot of lines around there but was always looking at that while driving tourists in a shuttle van. Would be amazing if to see someone send it if the water is high enough.

I've spent a lot of time pursuing the river toe drag and made it happen a few times and even gone for a swim or two but you have to decide between proximity flying the whole way to the rec path OR gliding out to get a good angle on the water swoop.
