I found his handwritten notes for this online - downloaded, printed off and now on my bookshelf. They're fantastic - show his mind in motion as he takes in the arguments from the other side of the debate.

I'm looking forward to hearing what the Catholic side of the panel had to say after this moving speech... I'd bet a lot it will be mostly more excuses, double-talk, and evasions. In any cases, what can be concluded from all Hitchens outlined is that not only is the Pope not infallible, but the long line of Popes have been massively harmful to millions of people (including millions of children), with most of the Catholic hierarchy having colluded in the horrors.

I don't get it. why blaming religion for men's crimes.going after mother Teresa who brought the attention of the world to the sufferings in Asia and Africa. what did this man archive? they keep bringing Galileo story with the church, they never mention father Mersin who smuggled Galileo's book and made sure it was published'. there's religion and there's men.

In 1940 Time magazine quoted Einstein lauding the Catholic Church for its role in opposing the Nazis: Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. Catholicism failed to rise above the humanity it attempted to lead. Catholicism was infiltrated by those seeking power, not through politics by through the religion dedicated to preserving humanity from the threat of extinction. Is Catholicism any worse than any other religion on a pro-rated basis? Is placing blame at the base of the Catholic Church more productive than seeking a unifying basis for humanity to accept others as equal to oneself?

would not be incorrect to say that the catholic church is the most corrupt, immoral institution in world history...no, institutions period become corrupt by their very nature...organized religion, however, can possess an exceptional power b/c of its "supernatural" potency...and you can commit all kinds of crimes in the name of God...people don't need religion; they need educating...but good luck with that

Didn't notice before, but there's a lot of emotion in his voice - sounds almost choking up at certain moments near the end - and evidence of speaking off-script. This is more heartfelt than his usual performances.

Referring to someone propagating ignorance and superstition as " your grace" only supports and encourages his..and other peoples delusional mental state. Belief in spooks in the sky or any other superstitious nonsense should only be condemned . Their insanity must in no way be encouraged or supported.. either activity or passively.

No. Mr. Hitchens was always respectful when addressing those with whom he disagreed. He used the title "Your Grace", and with every word he spoke, described the shallow meaning of the title. The only person, explained in one of his last interviews, that he would have refused to shake hands with was Henry Kissinger. He did not need to show disrepect.. he was clever enough to point out why an opponents views were not worthy of respect and the fallicy of those views. Basically, if someone wishes to believe in something and helps them sleep at night.. fine.. Don't impose it on others or attempt to argue Faith.. Science will win. Be Well!! 😃

Those who seek to prove something show, through the very fact that they seek to prove it, that what must be proved is not readily perceptible to them. We actually seek to prove something whenever we have no direct perception of it. When people had a perception of what they called the divine being in older, instinctive cognition, they did not need proof. Historically, the proof for the existence of God began only when the perception was lost. Evidence is required wherever there is no perception.

This is the only debate I've ever seen of Christopher Hitchens where he wasn't far and away the smartest person in the room. Stephen Fry's statement was singularly the most beautiful and damning statement I've ever heard.

I have often been glad that I was raised as an Episcopalian. I did develop a spiritual practices since I had to compete with my father and Uncle who were ordained as well as my Grandfather priest to the Episcopal nuns at Versalles Kentucky where he had risen so far as priest to those beautiful nuns. Over my first drink of Scotch I was told that the Virgin Mary was called so because she was the town whore while Joseph was the town gay guy who was taking care of her. "There goes the Virgin Mary and Joseph." There is humor in the Bible if you want to look for it.

With all due respect, I don't really understand why "competing" with your father, uncle or grandfather was something you found to be a necessary undertaking. But as for humor in the bible? Go to search and type Sam Kinison "Breaking the rules" for some hilarity! :)

@@playinhard Thanks. There was a woman from New Orleans that gave sermons at the church I went to who gave very funny sermons. I think partly because she was from New Orleans. My mother would attack us with a broom to make us get up and go to church. You have to like a good sermon.

What Hitchin's did not want to understand is that people want something to believe in and the tenants that Jesus proposed e.g 'He that be without sin shall throw the first stone,' - gave people a civilised spirtual and practcal way to do so - believe.
