Hi im a beginner trombone and ive been practicing lower notes and high notes on a tenor tbone, does having a Fat lips would be difficult to master or to reach high notes? I mean i can play high notes but the problem is my tone is changing like i couldnt make a single whole note in high F

Playing a high F for a whole note is no joke!! Everyone has different anatomy and that means everyone needs to find a way to make things work for them. Keep exploring and you’ll find your way…

@@NickFinzer Naah man credit where its due , I'm az you know nearly 5 yrs re-learning after over two decades from not playing due to losing top frnt teeth . It's a bit ironic that I have no teeth left now n playing some decent music m8 , even if I do say myself every day something special gets played n that alone makes me feel accomplished , even managed the D F lip trill yesterday. Try that with no teeth hehe . Teeth they just got in the way pal , keep blowing luv your playing it's v good .

Hi Nick, Do you play these suites on a big horn or always on your (is it a 2B?. I'm usually practicing everything on a large horn. What do you advise?
@NickFinzer
@NickFinzer 9 күн бұрын
I play a 3B plus (525 bore) - and yes I always play everything on that same horn - if you switch between horns you should do it on both! :)

When I tongue notes it sounds like I’m trying to get mucus out the front of my throat and I don’t know why. I’m placing my tongue in the area people mostly refer to (where the teeth meets the gums) but I don’t know what is causing this noise. Do you have any advice?
@NickFinzer
@NickFinzer 10 күн бұрын
It sounds like you might actually be using your throat to do the tongueing instead of your tongue. It could be "in the right place" but "doing the wrong thing"
@akkin5460
@akkin5460 10 күн бұрын
@@NickFinzer is there anything I can do to fix it? I’ve been trying to practice tonguing exercises at a far slower tempo and took everything back to the basics but I still end up hearing the noise and I’m not sure how to stop using my throat if it is the issue.
@NickFinzer
@NickFinzer 9 күн бұрын
You have to work with a teacher who can help you isolate the problem and work to correct it. Sounds like a muscle memory problem, you'll need to retrain your throat to remain relaxes while playing and engage only your tongue for articulation...

My favorite insight here is JJ’s citing (or: confirming!) Lester as his first indelible influence regarding the linear way of playing, around 9:00-11:00. So much of modern trombone playing seems (in my opinion) to forget that for JJ to get where he did, he reached almost wholly beyond his own instrument. (He does also mention Vic Dickenson as one influence.) Also: “I have a microphone set up at home where I can tape, listen back, and be critical or analytical” and “practice practice practice practice” regarding clarity. “Try to acquire good practice habits.” Also around 36:40-41:00 where he discusses his career changes. And his citing of “A Touch of Satin” as his favorite of his own recordings.

Thanks for that tonguing tip you gave last time Nick - playing just the throat syllable for a minute. It helps sharpen up articulation. I've incorporated it with your exercise using chord note pattern 1-3-5-3 going around the circle of fifths - first going Koo-Koo, Koo-Koo, then double-tonguing, then double tonguing backwards just for fun (5-3-1-3) then triple tonguing. I like the fact it uses all keys, major chords and positions, and challenges slide accuracy, breath control and tongue stamina. Feels like a proper 'bone workout! 😄

I'd love to hear your opinion on this, thanks! So, according to my musical theory knowledge a "C7sus" would be an incomplete name for a chord; this is because I'd be missing either the 2nd or 4th in the name, for example: C7sus2 or C7sus4. Nonetheless, I may be wrong because this makes me think that if I just see "sus" it's pointing to the 4th. Hence, I'd agree: "C7sus" has the notes C, F, G & Bb. What's your take on this? I'm having my doubts but I may be wrong. Cheers!
@NickFinzer
@NickFinzer Ай бұрын
Sus always implies the 4th unless otherwise noted
