The cabled sweater is such a beautiful colour! The weekender is looking great too Julieanne, the knitting machine sounds like a whole new challenge and learning opportunity, and also so satisfying to get it working to make something so beautiful!

For the socks made on the knitting machine, to continue following the two needle rule, could you do a 2x2 rib but add one knit stitch before and one purl stitch after? The row would read k3, p2, k2, ....p2, k2, p3. That would keep the needle rule and also give one extra stitch either side for the seam and keep the pattern once stitched together. Just a thought!
@LovebirdLaneMakes
@LovebirdLaneMakes Ай бұрын
Ooo yes, that could work! And it would be easy enough to decrease those stitches to get back to my desired stitch count. Fab! Thanks! 😃

Lovely to see all your projects. Your knitting machine projects are really interesting. I remembered a knitting machine surge in the 80s. There would always be demos at our county fairs. You inspired me to start up a spreadsheet for mine, now that I am back into my sock knitting. I ended up having 8 pairs of socks on the needles. I thought I had at least 5. 😳 Time to get cracking so I can start more. LOL

Hahaha! 8 sock WIPs??? Wow! Do you do patterned socks usually or just vanilla? I would have loved to have seen the knitting machines in action at a fair! I know I could join a group and get the similar result, but I'm so anxious, introverted and socially awkward that I'm too afraid to. 😅 So muddling along on my own it is. 😅

@@LovebirdLaneMakes It's 10 now. 😆 Although this seems to be working for me. I use them like fidget toys and am always working on one while watching videos. Having so many keeps me from getting board. I have actually finished a couple too. I have just completed my first patterned sock and do want to try more. Groups are hard, especially when you are on your own. I was lucky enough to join my local spinning guild, along with my sister. I ended up going on my own quite a lot and enjoyed the environment, until I had to stop going, due to work. It can be quite draining though, when you are naturally not a social person. It would take me a day afterwards to decompress and settle back into myself. It was worth it though for the mutual love of the craft and the pool of experiences.

In a fascinating bit of serendipity, I picked up an Empisal Vistamatic NG-H3 about the same time you did and am excited to follow your progress here! I have no idea how one with that branding made its way to the U.S., but I'm quite happy to have it! I also got it in a bundle along with a Toyota punchcard machine, but have decided to figure out the simpler machine before I go wild with the patterns. What size sponge bar did you end up getting for yours?
@LovebirdLaneMakes
@LovebirdLaneMakes 3 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh! That's so cool! That's really interesting that yours is badged as Empisal; I thought it was a UK/Australia thing! The Vistamatic is a fun machine, I think it's my favourite of all the machines I've used so far. 💕 I too got it in a bundle with an Empisal punchcard machine with a ribber (I've done a video on that if you haven't seen it, it's only a couple back) along with my Vistamatic and I've had less success with that one. I don't think my punchcard reader works unfortunately, and my husband has had to take the carriage apart and fix some stuff already. And now I have the double bed Passap (I have short making a sock on that), I might move the punchcard with ribber one on. As for sponge bars, the Vistamatic doesn't need one! Yay! Basically, the needle retaining bar is all that's required. Hopefully yours is present. All the best with your journey! Have fun!

I think it would be a good idea to sort out any of this yarn that you do not feel drawn to and just get rid of it, don't even try to find ideas or projects and start spending time and effort on something you ultimately won't enjoy. I'm sure there is enough yarn left after sorting to practice on the knitting machines with, some of it you did seem to like after all! Loving this series, it's great company as I work through my won stash, keep it up! :)

I had no idea that machine knitting yarn was treated with wax to make it smoother to work! Maybe the bright colours you don't like so much could be sold together as a lot for someone who likes making children's sweaters.

Yes! It helps to prevent the fluffiness of the yarn causing issues. That being said, I don’t wax any of the yarns I’ve used that were my own stash. And I’ve not had many problems so far. Perhaps if I try knitting mohair??! 😂

Night and day. Now that I have the skills down, I could easily knit a pair in less than 2 hours on the machine. Provided there's no mistakes or dropped stitches to deal with. 😅 Personally I could probably hand knit a plain stocinette sock in a day or two, but I'm not typical; I have a lot of time to knit. But yes, a night and day difference.🙂

crochet definitely uses more yarn, and i think tunisian crochet uses even more! I started making a tunisian crochet blanket with one of my advents, and each colour is only getting me a few cm of my blanket, so I think I'll need probably 2 advents worth of yarn to finish it. for garments I have a few of holly woodward's designs on my ravelry favourites list, specifically her gertie and jilly cardigans.

Yes, crochet uses way more yarn than a knitted item. Crochet is faster, though (once you've been doing it for a bit). I think crochet is great for blankets, but I prefer knitted clothing because they are less bulky.
@Brienna82
@Brienna82 6 ай бұрын
I prefer crochet but i always knit socks, so i don't know if crochet would factually eat up more yarn, but in theory it makes sense to me that it would. since visually i feel a regular knit stitch would represent the same amount of yarn on the hook when you've only just pulled through the yarn for a single crochet (<-- US terms, double crochet in UK terms), but then you need to yarn over again and pull through both loops to complete the stitch which would be an amount not consumed by a knit stitch. also regarding the SRI, i hope they at least considered the possibility of a carpal tunnel syndrome before just tossing the SRI diagnosis at you and if not, maybe something you can bring up yourself as something to investigate? they have pretty similar symptoms after all. and don't know about you but i feel that i flex my wrist more when crocheting compared to knitting, which if carpal tunnel (meaning a pinched nerve in the wrist) would make sense that you have more problem when crocheting compared to knitting. Of course i'm not qualified for any diagnosis, just throwing out the thought so you can do with it as you feel best fits you. oh, also i really like the Edlothia crochet shawl because of the mix of stitches it uses in the pattern same with the Rings of Change circular blanket/throw, keeps the pattern interesting with stitch changes. (<-- i did this in fingering weight yarn which is smaller than the pattern, but gave me about 150cm across still when finished) both easily found on Ravelry.

I don’t crochet enough to really know, but I made a couple pot holders in January and feel like I got them done quicker than I could have knit them and I used most of two 50g balls, so maybe it’s more about the speed of using yarn in crochet projects 🤷🏻‍♀️
