we have a few crossings on the VIA line in my area that have seen some inattentive drivers impacted. those new units do not look like they will take collision’s like CP or CN heavy iron. great catch but i worry about the lifespan of those VIA head-ends as they look like LRT quality.

Fair point. Built more for speed, I can definitely see that. But drivers need to be more attentive, patient, smart, and respectful of the warning systems that are in place. Thanks for watching!

In China all the high speed rail is built on elevated tracks. There are no at-grade crossings. Much safer. I wish we had infrastructure like that.

if you can remark or estimate, how close are you allowed to stand by the tracks for rail fanning? i want to start but prefer to stay legal/safe. where you are looks like lots of space but i see much closer on other vids. you seem like a responsible person to ask. rule of thumb or is there a set distance?
@KPrime316 ай бұрын
Great question, and thank you. I don't really have a distance I stick to. I will select locations based on the area around me. I prefer to have room to "escape" if something were to happen, especially if my boys are with me. And I'll try to stay in parking lots, side roads, and large areas like the diamond area in this one. With most of the technology out there, it's easy to get a good shot even from a decent distance as you can zoom in, and still get a really good video. I try and respect their work environment, and think about it from their perspective as to what they would want. As in you're not close enough for them to think that you're going to jump in front of the train, or anything like that. I've seen people literally right next to the locomotive as it passes, and that's just not respectful. I've asked a CN maintenance worker one night about his advice on this. And he said that also, as long as we're respectful of them and their job, and the property of the company, then they really don't have a problem. Also, a really good tool I have is a small flexible tri-pod. I can fit that in closer to the rails, like on a whistle pole, or mile post pole, things like that, and get some really cool shots without putting myself that close as they come by. If there is not a train in the vicinity, I have been really close, and sometimes out on the tracks, to get some track damage shots, or track roll out information, things like that. But I am constantly looking in both directions just to make sure it is still clear while I'm out there. Most of my shots are from an adjacent restaurant/park parking lot in Vicksburg, that's one of my favorite spots to record. Something like that is perfect, and that might be a good place to start looking for. Google maps is a really good tool to see where these areas are. That's how I found a spot when I filmed a CSX visiting my dad in Hudsonville. It was on the corner of a road, and that corner was right next to the tracks. Hope that helps!! Have fun, enjoy, and be careful!
@SSaugaCriss6 ай бұрын
@@KPrime31 well thought out. i will try the common sense method and hopefully no issues with enforcement. at the airport security says 10ft from the fence is their policy.
@KPrime316 ай бұрын
I've had a friend speak with officers, and they don't have any problems. And just the other day in Climax, Sheriff drove right by with a nice wave. So we have not run into any problems like that. And yes, common sense will usually win. :) But you'd be surprised how many do not have that...yikes. Oh, fun tip, if you find a spot that is not near a crossing, it's cool to hear the locomotives roar by. Or if there happens to be a DPU, it's some of the best sounds out there. Thanks again!!!

@@KPrime31 thnx. CNI & UP are the biggest i think so good catch here. the diamond is neat. if still in use maybe you’ll see a crossing one day.

Actually, we have caught a crossing. Our local class 3 railroad Grand Elk has come to the diamond and stopped to wait for 2 CN's to pass. Check out the video, the boys were with me for that one. It was pretty cool.
