Great explanation, but you must also consider the NFVA of any baffles placed under the roof at each soffit vent. They're often under 25 sq in when a vent sheet is fully used between 24" rafter spacing. If you're forced to use a half sheet of baffle due to tighter rafter spacing (such as 16"), then you are REALLY restricting the NFVA. In other words, if you're going to use baffles, you may have to significantly increase the number of soffit openings used, and there's no need to use large soffit vents as the baffles will be restricting the flow, anyway.

Except for tear off (cap shingle) or cut off (3-tab), I don't see the difference. BTW, Homedepot/Lowes now sold out 12" cap shingles, so 3-tab becomes better choice. Installer spent a bit more time to cut yet also a bit money.

Always have more soffit vent capacity than roof vent. Allows for better ventilation. Doesn't mean double the capacity either. If you need 488 sq inches of exhaust then use 500 sq inches of soffit vent. Or a bit more. Equal balancing may not be optimal for cooling. Especially on those hot 100F deg days with sun blazing on your roof. It will take more air flow to draw out the heat than what it needed at say 80F.

In the case you are doing an open valley (metal flashing) would this sit on top of the cut ends of the underlayment in the valley?
