Thanks man! It’s great when you hear it “tip” into the actual lick, that oval feeling! I’ll be working on this! 🙏

I saw him just a couple days after this show, at the Cellar Door in Washington DC. The outside temperature was in the Mid-teens, and it had been raining. About 40 minutes earlier, I had seen them doing last minute gear checks, before heading outside for a safety meeting. When they came back inside, Gadd headed to the bar and slammed a highball glass of Courvasier before climbing on stage. Within seconds, they had heated up a rather cold (literally) room to the boiling point and proceeded to "blow da' roof offa' da' joint." To this day, it is one of the most intense shows I've ever seen...

Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, Chuck Mangione, who is the other guy?

Bala com Bala! Underrated song. The beat is so recognizable I knew the song without the other instruments. Just found out who this was from the new Elis and Tom documentary.

Amazing. You’re spot on with the history of the 10” Tom. Remember that 40s 50s drummers were also experimenting. The Concert Tom Tom was very prolific with drummers like Lionel Hampton and even chick Webb. I think your conversation and explanations are really important to the world of music. Brilliant
Dear Ruben, could you please explain the groove Steve is playing on Michael Franks' "When The Cookie Jar is Empty" track from the Burchfield Nines album? Thanks.

I've told this story way too many times but here it is again. I saw Gadd with Chic Correa at the Blue Note in NYC in 2001. Sat NEXT to Gadd for 4 shows (got a seat next to him...I had to move for him to leave the stage). I saw all 4 shows over both nights, same seats. The last show of the last night, be broke into a samba for an encore. What he did that night is not describable, but the audience reaction said it all: the entire room screamed at the top of their lungs, putting their hands on their heads, all while he was playing, as he drove the crowd into a frenzy.I thought there was going to be a riot. I will never forget that night.
