Strange how Southampton didn't do better with the players they had in that era. I always thought that Liverpool should have strengthened their squad at the end of 1990. The team, while still very good, was running out of steam and it needed new blood with the likes of Le Tissier and Shearer. But Liverpool embarked on one of the strangest transfer policies ever after winning the title - buying rubbish, while it was Man Utd who began buying well...of course the rest is history.

How on earth did they find room for Shearer, Rideout, Le Tiss and Wallace in the same team? That's an attack to scare anyone.

"The Southampton keeper" was Tim Flowers. It's as if the commentator didn't know his name. Chris Nichol was Saints manager. Liverpool were in 2nd place; Southampton in 3rd, at the start of the game, according to 11v11 website.

A mere 21-year-old Le Tiss, already a fully-formed genius, scoring a breathtaking hat-trick on the way to 20 league goals that season in a good Southampton team who were only outscored by Liverpool, and yet who went to the World Cup in the summer? A crocked Neil Webb, a half-dead Bryan Robson, and Steve Bull, a striker with no top flight experience who had played one full season outside the bottom two divisions. While Matt waits 4 more years and 2 managers for even a call-up. Absolutely speechless.
@Dead-Ball-Situation5 күн бұрын
Yes very strange I agree, he should have gone to Italy. Today he probably would but back in those days, England managers never really liked taking too manky skillful players and especially not ones who weren't playing for top sides. Steve Bull was a striker, and England weren't blessed with lots of top strikers at the time, so they took him instead as back up to Lineker.

Had a season ticket in the Archers road when I was a kid, £96 for the whole season! How times have changed. It was amazing watching Le God all those years ago..One of the country's most naturally gifted payers ever in my opinion. Good times at The Dell.

Saints have produced some top players down the years. Terry Paine, Ron Davies, Shearer and Matt Le Tissier to name but 4. Not often Liverpool took a clobbering like that back then.

Not just a question of what if with Southampton and the numerous top class players they have lost over the last few years but back in the early 90s. Shearer, Wallace, Flowers, Le Tissier and Rideout to name but a few.

Southampton, the better team on the day by a mile. Some wonderful fluid football and beautiful goals. This was not the typical manner in which other teams pulled off shock results against Liverpool back then with scrappy goals from set pieces (eg Crystal Palace in the semi final that same season)
