THERE IS A NEW TRIGUN ANIME? I didn't know! I only saw the one from the...90ies? Which was amazing because it starts out so lighthearted and it becomes so, so dark. I haven't finished watching this, but I'm already certain you'll more than do Vash justice.

Thank you!!! I didn't finish the old anime and I didn't know that it will get much darker. And the new anime just starts dark, right in your face 😂 I like the charm of the old anime more though, in the new anime they use too much CGI and it makes faces look a bit weird.

@@DollAfterlife His arm! So good! As for hand sculpting vs 3D printed things...I know that there's still a lot of artistic skill when you create and print your parts, but there are quite a few contact creators who make use of the latter, and who I just...don't enjoy as much. There's Moonlight Jewel, who makes the most incredible dolls and figurines, but she has a printer, a cricut, a vinyl press, etc. etc. She's incredibly skilled, but there's no way I could ever create something like it without all those aids. While if someone sculpts it of clay, even if it's way beyond my own skill, I still get the feeling that I COULD do it. And that makes me feel better about a custom, somehow.

While at doll scale things like printing and post-processing _are_ faster than the sculpting, it's worth noting that digital sculpting doesn't have dry times, but it _does_ take time. "3D printing is faster than making it by hand" is actually a myth, it's often true maybe, but that's balanced by the fact that when it's slower it's much _much_ slower, and sometimes it just comes out even. Printing fine detail means a longer print time, and your sculpting needs are often niche enough that I'd bet you'd end up making your own files rather than buying them, which takes time, and ultimately, doll scale prints are fragile. Filaments and resins for printing are often either brittle or hard to sand - either it has elasticity and strength or it's easy to finish nicely but more prone to cracking if dropped. The choice between hand sculpting and 3D printing isn't Old vs New, or Good vs Perfect, it's a material/technical choice like Acrylic vs Gouache. They do different things, they work different ways, and you achieve different results with them. I can see why this project would make you wonder if 3D printing would be better - this is definitely an instance where you'd have gotten a solid result much faster with printing, mechanical detail is the bread and butter of a technology based medium. You don't only do mechanical detail though, you make organic things all the time, and that's can actually be kind of a pain to print. Organic often means more supports which means more sanding, and if you want that organic thing to be integrated onto a doll or into a prop? You'll have to hand sculpt anyway to merge them, and at that point you might as well do the whole thing lol, your dry times are basically the same.
@raven5279
@raven5279 15 күн бұрын
TLDR: I understand why this sculpt might have sparked the idea, but without being _excited_ by the prospect of 3D printing, I don't think that the time and effort it would take to learn it would serve you, your sculpting abilities are fine enough and generally fast enough that the projects you do wouldn't truly benefit from it. If you really feel like you'd be happier with something 3D printed in the future rather than hand sculpted you can hire someone to do it for you, otherwise, keep on as you are.
@DollAfterlife
@DollAfterlife 15 күн бұрын
Everything you said makes perfect sense untill you say that my sculpting abilities are "fast enough" judging from a massively sped up and cropped video you got to see on KZfaq. 😅 Curing time is not a big deal here because this time can be used for something else. What truly takes time is sculpting and sanding. And cleaning after every sanding 😅 I bet 2-3 weeks would be more than enough to sculpt and find out how to print an arm like this for example. If we don't count curing time and planning, this arm alone took me about 30-40 hours to sculpt/carve/sand it, because I sand after every layer, and I layer and adjust things a lot. I don't think it turned out good because I'm super skilled, it turned out good because I spent a lot of hours on adjusting/sanding etc. Also it's important to mention that fine sculpting takes a lot of concentration and it's more tiring, as you have to sit for hours in the same position and have much control over your body, to have steady hands. The arm is a pretty specific piece that has to be unique, but if I was making other accessories like shoes for example, with a 3d printer it could be printed in bigger amounts and potentially sold to other collectors, which is a common practice among doll artists these days, and could be an additional source of income. But! You make a very good point about 3d printed things being fragile. For detailed work it would probably make sense to use resin, but resin is too fragile. I think these bones one the arm would snap in no time and it's the last thing I'd want 🥲 but again, I think ABS filament could be strong enough for this. If it's not good enough for small details- can print a base and then hand sculpt fine details, which is still faster than sculpting everything from scratch.
@DollAfterlife
@DollAfterlife 15 күн бұрын
Well, and yes: apoxie sculpt is also fragile if you drop it.
@raven5279

@@DollAfterlife I think the thing that was specifically making me- hesitant I suppose I'd say, to agree with the idea that, specifically starting cold turkey, it would have been faster to learn 3D printing than sculpt it, isn't me underestimating how long it took you to make it. Sculpting fine mechanical detail _is_ a time consuming pain, and I know that from personal experience and 3D printing is, as I mentioned, good at it, and is an objectively better medium than hand sculpting for this sort of thing. That said? I went into it comfortable with tech, and familiar with the vocabulary and general common set up of 3D modeling programs, and it still took me like 15 hours to learn blender, and it can also take 3-6 hours to put a printer together. That would already 18-21 hours down with no forward progress towards actually getting the arm done, minimum, because if you run into any serious issues, if you run into any function that's particularly hard for you to wrap your head around, that's even more hours on the clock. Like, to be so clear lol, I understand that someone who knows 3D printing + modeling could have had it done and dusted faster, and with less physical strain. What I question is the idea that _you_ would have benefited in this particular instance from going a different route, because that person who knows 3D printing and modeling isn't you. If you want to sell shoes or shoe bases, or other replicatable items learning how to print would help you, if you want to start making a series of characters who all have fine mechanical detail, sure, it would cut down on a lot of time. Retrospectively looking back and wondering if it would have been faster/less frustrating to have picked up a new skill? Only if you were very lucky, it's likely that you would have dealt with frustrations you were less capable of solving on your own.
@DollAfterlife
@DollAfterlife 14 күн бұрын
@@raven5279 well see, you need to learn the program once. You don't have to learn it again for every piece you make, so it's not fair to include the entire learning time into this 1 specific element, if it makes sense. So of course if I wanted to use a 3d printer and learn everything just for 1 arm it wouldn't be worth it. It would take even longer, because I accept I'm terrible with technologies. But once learned it could be beneficial in a long run.

One unexpected technique I have learned from other artists is the use of painted shadows and highlights, Even on an already three-dimensional surface. (“Contouring”) By including shadows and highlights in the eyes, on the cheeks, and along the nose, for example, you can add a Lot More implied nuance in shape and texture. Not only for the sake of cosmetics, or ‘makeup’, these details can be crafted to add that tiny bit more that can define realism, or an Actual likeness. Additionally, the use of a high-gloss glaze over the eyes and lips, while otherwise having a matte finish, can give that moist and living look to the final product Lastly, I have always been told to avoid using Actual Black when doing any color or shading work on the body. Darn browns, blues, greys, etc. are fine - but Actual Black should ONLY appear in the pupils of the eyes. Absolutely Stunning Work! So glad you’re back at it! Your craftsmanship is truly impressive to behold. 😁

I always favor handcrafting and artisanal work as it provides a real human connection that transcends time. Even on the greatest of human works, it can be an accidental fingerprint, or the marks made by the tools themselves that provide the most powerful connections through centuries of time between. In future, this human approach will likely be its most significant attribute! 😁👍🤓
