Biggest reason we use veneer is that the "wooden boards" underneath are produced so they wont warp and bend. You can build them in your shop, take them to the clients and even if there are differences in humidity the finished product stays at it is. No steel inlays or anything else needed! Its also better to store and you dont need to order several different sorts of wood and stash the leftovers somewhere. Sorry if i made mistakes, English is not my first language. Edit: you also dont get cracks or tear outs in your furniture/workpiece.

Your baltic birch looks like it has a melamine coating on it. Is that right? I had to go to a specialty hardwood source (about 40 miles from the smaller town I live in) to even purchase a 4 by 8 sheet of baltic birch ply. The big stores don't ever have it. Too expensive, I guess.

No it’s just regular ole Baltic Birch. I get mine from a local company that supplies a lot of the cabinet shops in the area. Pricing has skyrocketed since 2020.

what is the point of the split in split top benches?
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 10 күн бұрын
Good question! It allows for a lot of clamping flexibility as clamps can go through the center of the bench and the plane stop helps for working with hand tools. You could also use it as a tool well and for other jigs.

Apply veneer tape dry, then go over the top with a wet rag. The water soaks through the paper and activates the glue without wiping any of it off or damaging the very fragile tape.

@TimberBiscuitWoodworks thanks for the lesson. The plugs are a great idea because it protects the screws from the elements (even deck screws deteriorate).
