May I make some simple observations as an outsider? First, there could be a distinction between spirit and soul. By that I mean a soul is bound to a particular body or incarnation and the spirit is the "energizing motivator" that transcends particular incarnation (body) and any idea of an ego around that body. It would make sense to say that the soul is captured by the spirit, much like a body is "possessed" by a "demon". It is not mentioned as much, but saints are also "possessed" by "angels". The spirits, however are not identifiable with a particular incarnation, body, or ego. Thus, the "spirits in prison" would not be particular departed souls, such as your wicked uncle Harry, but the dominant negative emotional states animating the mind. When Christ was "made alive in the spirit", one can conclude that He returned to these dominate states - they be love and compassion. The current research on the Shroud of Turin imply that Christ was not a body with a soul, but a pure manifestation of spirit made visible to souls. The appearances after the Resurrection to some of the disciples is another indication of this ability (to appear as flesh). These states (love and compassion) are liberating. The "spirits in prison" have not experienced the liberation of love and compassion, and are thus bound, such as "in prison", to the harmful consequences of such states - such as anger, jealousy, lust, etc. Preaching to these spirits would be something like showing these spirits the consequences of these states, how these states are preventing happiness (binding or imprisoning them), and introducing them to the states that liberate, such as love and compassion. Alas, these spirits may not have had "the ears to hear".

This letter to the Romans is the source of so much distress in the world, not because of Paul, but because of rampant misuse of his words, which came from the HOLY GHOST HIMSELF Calvin and the like purposely mistranslate this message pertaining to "works' as meaning Paul is talking about "good works" not being required for salvation, which is ridiculous-and has led to the horrible condition of the Church in the world today, and the loss of so many Souls, and entire countries, to the lies of Protestantism (predestination being a main one) If some are predestined for salvation then this lessens the responsibility we ALL have in this relationship with GOD; and this leads to Souls giving up the fight before they ever start fighting at all. If we do not do violence to ourselves, we will not make the KINGDOM of GOD (MATTHEW 11:12) There are rampant mistranslations in Protestant bibles, especially concerning THIS LETTER, for reasons that are fairly obvious such as "FREE GIFT" Romans 5 and 6----when there is no mention of FREE at all in the Greek text In the Protestant Bible I am currently stuck using, and it is for the most part good, this mistranslation is included to lead souls astray, and to mislead Souls away from the message Paul is actually giving. "Works" pertains to the Old Law, and "Grace" pertains to the New Law. The Old was external in a way, being enforced on you; by fear and the New is internal in the Soul. The Old was fear of punishment, and the New is about LOVE and Life in the Soul. "Free gift" would imply that we do not need to do anything to receive this gift, and this is a lie. We need to merit this gift, or we will be damned, whether we are Chosen or not. There is no "elect" who is saved by GOD despite being a sinner. Please read the parable of the ten virgins which states this clearly Anybody who does not have their lamp lit will be shut out, virgin or not. (Matthew 25) There are no favorites to GOD, as this would make HIM unjust. If your lamp is lit, you go to Heaven, and if it is dark, you go to Hell. There are Chosen people like Moses, and these servants will be subjected to a harsher judgment than the other "Chosen people". "Those who are given much in trust, more will be expected." LUKE 12:48 it is always best to stay with JESUS, even when comparing HIM to Saint Paul. Saint Paul is confusing to many Souls, and it takes a lot of Grace to understand him, and pagans do not have any Grace yet. We need to read the entire letter to keep proper context, and people do not seem to be able to do this. If Saint Paul died with his lamp our, he would go to Hell. Make no mistake about that. But Paul was so intense about his Faith, that we know this is not likely to happen. And he was martyred as well for his faith, so he was put the the test as far as he could be. NO SINNER GETS ANY GRACE, as Aquinas apparently taught, this is a HERESY Grace comes from doing the work we need to live with the SPIRIT within our Soul, and sin is what makes the HOLY GHOST leave, so no sinner can attain HIM, while living in sin. As Paul mentions in the letter, the "Builders" (Jews) have rejected the STONE, and it has become the cornerstone" (MATTHEW 21:12) and so the Jews are even more condemned than a gentile would be because: "He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and on whomever it will fall, it will crush him." (MATTHEW 21; 44) and Matthew 21:43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit." So JESUS is saying they are no longer the Chosen People in a sense, as they did not accept HIM as the CHRIST, the fulfillment of the Mosaic Law and all the Prophets. "Unless you believe that I AM HE, you will die in your sins." JOHN 8:24 So really, there are no Chosen people per se, or LELECT, but only those who CHOOSE GOD with the Free Will that GOD gave us ("GOD wants nobody lost" 2 PETER 3:9) Romans 9:18 "Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden." Did GOD harden the hearts of the Jews more than a typical pagan man? Yes. This is because they were given the gift of Truth, and then when they rejected it, there are very intense SPIRITUAL curses that will come with this rejection. "Your house will be left to you desolate" MATTHEW 23:38 GOD does this automatically to all sinners, but even more to those who know the TRUTH Today we see this in the "parable of the return of the unclean spirits", when we learn the Truth and go back to our pagan ways, we become the house of more vicious demons than any of our pagan predecessors were. I think he misses the main point of the Gospel. The kingdom grows in a mysterious way, and it is God at work. God calls for us to participate in this work of building the kingdom by planting the seed, but then we must also trust that God will bless our work and make it bear fruit.
