Didn't know about the surprise round, but I knew about the others! Problem is I forget about damage and concentration all the time, while my players forget to use their inspiration most of the time XD. I personally really dislike material spell components though as I feel they're boring and slow the pace down, so I usually ignore them except from plot-relevant spells like resurrection. It does also help there's a major psionic element to the campaign

The dm's of all 3 campaigns I've played recently all had a house rule for material components for spells, two of them know each other and came up with this rule together, the other doesn't know the other two and came up with the same. In session 0 they said 'I will dm-wave that you refill your component pouch at every settlement and city, also waving that you have enough until you get to the next settlement or city, where you are suddenly out of some or all components, I won't even have you remove gold. Spell Component Pouches are just so heavily common, they're practically free.'

I remembered all of these! The first rule also messes up one of the Rogue abilities RAW. I don’t remember which but I think it was from an Assassin Ability. It said something like “if a monster hasn’t taken a turn yet” so it doesn’t get better if you surprise monsters which it seems like it was intended for.

I'm a firm believer in the abbreviation K.I.S.S.(Keep It Simple Stupid)!! I feel that beginners should play a class that they're comfortable playing!! One example is the Champion fighter!! That was my first character and I just wanted to get used to the idea of managing a character. One time, my brother's 12 year old grandson was thinking of playing a wizard!! I suggested that he, at least, try playing the Eldritch Knight fighter so that he'll have SOME spellcasting and he can maybe ease into it when he decides to actually play a wizard!!

Divination is depending on your DM. If the DM wings it a lot your divination might be less powerful because it’s more vague or inaccurate. If it really is accurate it helps your party to be prepared. And a good preparation gives you half of the fights

One thing about Charisma Saves: they aren’t always just about your personality, they can also be about your soul. That’s why it’s used in Banishment because it’s centered around your soul itself. You kind of talked about this later in the video but I think it’s a cool thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough both by content creators and the core books even though it gets alluded to.

I think Monk (especially way of the shadow) completely removed the need for levels in Rogue since Monk is dex-based and you can just take proficiency in stealth and way of the shadow is good for hiding. I would also recommend taking Jump as I believe Artificer can take that and it fits thematically for web slinging. I do see a problem though in that I do think that the artificer armor would let you use unarmored movement and stuff like that as I didn’t notice anything letting you count as unarmored (although the flavor text does say that you become one with it). Also, for the alien symbiote storyline I think there are some items like that in the Eberron book: Dyrrn’s Tentacle Whip, Kyrizin’s Ooze, Living Armor and Gloves, etc. Also I’m sorry this comment is so long I just kept adding to it as I watched the video.

You're 100% right on about the Monk class! Way of the Shadow does cover a lot of what we'd want from Rogue, especially with the stealth abilities. That's exactly i went for it in this build. I like the premise and appreciate the effort you put forth, but while agree with the Fighter and Barbarian, primarily because they don't acquire Subclass features until level 3, I think the other recommendations are not something I'd give to new players. Sneak Attack, a Rogue's most distinct feature is not very straightforward and I've had more players misunderstand Stealth and Hiding more than any other mechanic in the game. Spellcasting in general is rather fraught, and combining that with Divine Domain features from a Cleric at level 1 is entirely too much. They're super powerful as a result, which makes up for many things, but it doesn't make them inherently user-friendly. Paladins are a hybrid and they don't get spellcasting until level 2 and their Oath comes at level 3, so it provides a nice on-boarding procedure, but they're still one of the most difficult classes to play well, mostly because of their Auras. I think Monks and Rangers are better candidates for new players. They're not as powerful as the other classes, but the majority of the power they do have is derived from weapon attacks. Ki is easy to understand, and I think it should be the way spellcasters work, too (if Ki were changed to Mana). In the case of the Ranger, most of their Spellcasting is utility based and more likely to be used out of combat. They can suffer from the Spellcasting and Stealth problems, but even if you entirely avoid those things, you can still bring a lot to a party in combat. In fact, I'd insist that new players don't even look at the spell list at all until they understand everything else about their class. There's entirely too much bloat and, with D&D being a exception based rule system, you have to know SOO much about the game for any of it to make sense (unless we're talking about some of the cantrips). All-in-all, I'd focus on helping new players feel comfortable with the very basic mechanics first (most prominently found in Martial Classes) and build up from there.
@BananaBreakdown
@BananaBreakdown 16 күн бұрын
Hey! Fair points, mate. You've clearly put some thought into this, i'm super appreciative of the time you put into watching and commenting on all my videos again :) For me I reckon the best approach is to tailor it to the player. Some newies might love the complexity of spellcasting or sneak attacks, while others might prefer the straightforwardness of a Fighter or Barbarian. But I see what you're saying and honestly I agree about 75% of the time! The key, I think, is to gauge what excites themr. That said, I'm all for introducing mechanics gradually. Start with the basics, then layer on the cool stuff as they get comfortable. It's about finding that sweet spot between simplicity and the character they wanna play. Cheers for sharing your thoughts! It's always great to hear from you, I really look forward to it honestly, your name always makes me smile mate!

Heyo! I enjoy the premise of the video and I think the second two are solid ideas. I'm all for giving players more agency and control over their environment. The first is, in my opinion, a bit of a reach. My players already have trouble remembering that they have Guidance, Bless, or Advantage/Disadvantage. I think it might turn into just another thing for the GM to remind them of. Additionally, if you gave me a choice of a +1 to hit or a +1 to damage, I'm always taking the + to hit. It isn't much of a choice, statistically speaking - unless you're hitting with every attack regardless. Now, I realize that there isn't a choice, but when comparing two sides of a coin, they need to be relatively even, provided that is the intention. For me to be interested in investing brainpower into this mechanic, I would need bigger gains. Here are a few potential options: Momentum/Desperation should shared amongst the party members (if that wasn't already the intention). It should not require a number of successes/failures. The bonus is almost always active. Player A succeeds, Player B gets Momentum. Player B fails, Player C gets Desperation, et cetera. The Momentum bonus should be either + to Hit or + Spell Save DC, so it works for practically all classes. Imagine a +3 to Save DC on Stunning Strike/Hold Person! The Desperation bonus should increase Critical Strike Range (similar to Champion Fighter/Hexblade Feature) increase number of Targets/Area, or affect Duration/Remove Concentration. Here's the craziest suggestion, and you touched on it at the end of the video, the GM gains these benefits, too! I suppose that these could get outta hand, but it does come down to another issue plaguing D&D Combat, sloggy duration, and I'd rather it be fast and deadly, as opposed to slow and predictably safe.

I love your ideas for emphasizing teamwork and the boosts you mentioned. That's exactly what i'm trying to go for! Honestly, i've got a book of different homebrew rules i've either played or want to play with i've written down over the years. The last couple years i've been playing smaller groups, so i feel like that may be why this is a bit too complex for larger parties. I’ll definitely think about these suggestions for future tweaks. I came into dnd with a idea of being neutral evil. Then in my first campaigns session 2 i was handed a cursed weapon. With out knowing what exactly i had, i threatened to leave the sword in the place i found it. However i needed a guide to get through the rest of the unseen dungeon. So when the sword agrees to my terms i planted it in the obvious bait gold it was at the top of and searched again wishing to find something interesting like a way to see in the dark (human character) i find a odd rock, thinking nothing of it i went back over and picked up my mentally talking sword. When it doesn't answer i squint and drop the rock, sword starts to talk. Fuck this talking sword, tell me what lies ahead. Nothing? Guess we both die together when i trigger whatever's ahead. Rock turned out to ve anti magic, when i met another player character with no weapons i convinced him to take the sword as i couldn't use it properly and he was a paladin.... Sword was cursed to consume ever more blood, when he killed things he had a timer to kill again in the same amount or be siphoned by the weapon....Make of that what you will.

I think druid and bard should be in their own tier as the most difficult classes to play. Clerics, wizards and sorcerers usually have easy options as long as they have spell slots available. Clerics can alway cast spells like bless, spiritual weapon and spirit guardians and heal in the meantime. Wizards and Sorcerers have so many of the good controll options but also blast spells like magic missile and fireball. Bard and Druid spells are so much harder to use since their staple spells are not as universal.

5:14 this example build gave me a chuckle because it was exactly my first dnd character.

Psi Warrior is another option for his force powers

@@BananaBreakdown don't know if the Psi Warrior is changed any in the 24 PHB from the one in Tashas CoE. Might need to have custom effects to emulate Force Powers, but that's Home Brew territory.

@@Mark-ki7ic Yep exactly, i actually had to redo this video because i was using a bit too much homebrew haha, so wanted to make sure i stick to the core rules. I kind of went a bit homebrew in my harry potter one. haha

Like to see your list after you've looked at the 2024 rule reset

Yep! I stupidly made this before even thinking of the September release ah. So I plan to make a new one as well for the new ruleset closer to when it comes out and I’ll organise them clearly :)

@@BananaBreakdown Monk should move higher just for being redone in the base class features. Druid is the same with Wildshape being streamlined, no idea if the "Known Shapes" made it into PHB. No trying to guess the stats of a Wombat.

@@Mark-ki7ic Oh you right! i'm going to need to do a proper read out of the new rules. I'm not too onboard with them just yet!

Your descriptions today are uncanny. First in the beginner video and now your description for True Neutral was for forest fires when my only True Neutral character was a circle of wildfire Druid.

@@BananaBreakdown I’m thinking of making a TTRPG KZfaq channel on another account. If I do we should definitely do a collaboration.

I think the most interesting bit about alignment is that, with mature players, it's provides a framework to help groups who's members are ideologically at odds with one another work together. The more I play, the more strongly I believe that these kinds of interactions are the very best part of TTRPGs.

100%! When I first started playing RPGs as a teen it never really interested me. Only when I became more in tune with story and narrative stuff it did. I love it now and it adds such an extra dimension to the games.
