I'm the anomaly, age-wise. I'm almost 75, and have always been very active up until this past winter. I like to hike, mountain bike, do inline street-skating, and up until last year was roller skating at skateboard parks. I also used to ski in the most distant past. I'm still skating and biking some, but mostly on the flats and still am extremely painful and can hardly walk the day after exercise. I've been putting off hip replacement because I figured I'd have to give up skating altogether because of the fall risk, even though I wear protective gear and hip pads. According to the doctors I have very mild osteopenia. This resurfacing procedure looks promising. Are there any Medicare supplemental insurance companies that cover this procedure? I'm considering dropping my Kaiser insurance and getting something else before getting hip surgery.

Dr. Gross did my hip resurfacing April 2023, I could not have asked for a better doctor or procedure. I am back to playing ice hockey only 6 months after the surgery and going strong @ 53. No limitations at all. Highly recommend the surgery and Dr. Gross.

Metals are TOXIC in hip replacements. Do your research folks!!!
@818063422 күн бұрын
Being disabled is also toxic. Lack of exercise, injuring other body parts doing daily things because your hip just won't bend anymore so you have to bend at other places in odd ways, no fun in life, eating anti inflammatories like it's candy in a vain attempt to sleep at night, the list goes on. Pick your poison.

This guy is a butcher , operated on me in August of 2022 .Was left with a mess and have had 5 more operations to correct what he had done to me and am expecting at least 2 more. Dr.James seems to have to operate on most patients at least 2 to 5 times. Was told before surgery that my surgery was a common one he had done many times , said I would more than likely take 30 to 90 days to heal up. I am now in to 22 months of pain and bleeding . 3 more doctors trying to fix what he had done to me . Right after his first surgery I wake up and he comes in my room saying he would have to operate again .Do yourself a favor and try anyone but this guy for your surgery . Also have been unable to work losing all my savings and retirement . I would never of thought he was going to ruin my life.

my surgeon told me that the technology for hip resurfacing isn’t advanced enough to get a permanent bind of the new material to the femural head. if there was a way to make that surfacing bind better, he’d recommend it all day long but he said the resurfacing just doesn’t last long enough. has that issue been solved? 62 yr old, bone on bone with no cartilage, strong healthy bones and very active athlete; big wave surfer, dirt bike rider.

I read a lot of papers and I learned that the femur head size is very important for the success of resurfacing. The larger the better. Larger than 55mm is excellent

Thank you for your video. I had my hip resurfaced in Norway in 2009, 14 years ago. I had to withstand cosmic pains until then. I consciously choose BHR over the Total Replacement, because its costruction is more natural, stable and bone saving. I have almost normal range of motion. But they have stoped to operate BHR about 12 years ago. They say, the main reason is the metal ions produced by friction of metal to metal prostetic. They are afraid of causing canser... I am afraid it will not come back...

@@maristamn Nei, så vidt jeg vet, sluttet de med denne protesen 1 år etter jeg fikk min protese. Du kan kontakte Kysthospitalet i Bergen, for det var de som opererte den i Norge.

This is very good information, and certainly happy to hear age is not a limiting factor. I'm a male (average size/wight), now 68, in good shape, and 10 years ago I(at 58) had a hip resurfacing procedure on my right leg, done at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC (a top notch facility). I now have a problem with my left hip, which is no surprise to me given my original diagnosis. I have had zero complications, until recently I'm very active in different sports. In a recent follow up test to check for ions in my blood stream, the results showed no problems at all, and that's after 10 years of use of the (BHR) resurfacing components. However, after consulting another doctor at HSS for my left leg he told me he would not do a resurfacing procedure on me, only because I was now 68. I found that so strange because my right leg was a told success (no negative reactions, the resurfacing components currently in place appear to be in good condition (from an X ray, meaning no obvious malfunctions/wear & tear). Hearing Doctor Gross's opinion, given his level of expertise, it sounds like I need another opinion, hoping I can in fact have another hip resurfacing procedure on my left leg, expecting similar results. Thank you Doctor Gross for this excellent video.

How are we dealing with metal debris which used to plague older metal on metal prosthesis?
@Uri1000x19 ай бұрын
The videos on hip replacement indicate that the high-density cross-linked polyethylene acetabular cup liner with a ceramic ball moving within it wears very little compared to older procedures using metal-to-metal contact. This video says there will be metal-to-metal wear with hip resurfacing implants. Other videos mention that very old procedures used metal-to-metal movement and caused severe complications, namely metallosis.

@818063422 күн бұрын
What did you find out? This is my exact concern with resurfacing vs replacement.
@mpdeshowitz22 күн бұрын
@@8180634 Sought two opinions. The surgeon that performed the BHR and another that rebuilt my shoulder. Both said the same thing. The femur head would likely be degraded after so long so a total hip replacement would be the best option.

Can a metal on metal Birmingham resurfacing implant be replaced with a better material instead of metal on metal? I have a 17 year old BHR and noticed that my CO and CR numbers are starting to increase in my blood work.
@racebannon23327 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear about your elevated numbers. The problem with metalossis, it’s irreversible unless the causative material (your prosthetic hip) is removed. I’m a surgeon and I too require a hip replacement due to FAI & subsequent arthritis. I’d prefer resurfacing but realize metalossis is a significant concern. Good luck
