This is pretty much how my henzie deck works as well, being able to blitz out huge pieces turn 4-5 and then hard casting them of cheating them out on later turn keeps that urge to play big stuff filled at all times

My issue with CEDH, is that it becomes very win at all costs and less likely to have screwball affects that could of been designed better but never been revisited. I like to see Epic, (Legends theme which has been expanded), Mercenaries, Sweep (or Mono-Color boons), Lairs, Fading/Vanishing, Soulshift, Arcane/Splice.

Mana dorks directly support the command zone. You can tap your dorks and then sacrifice them as removal. Turning every dork into a slow removal spell. Also, Natural Order a Dork t4 into Protean Hulk into Temur Sabertooth + Dockside just wins you the game. You can also Protean Hulk into Pregrine Took + Goblin Engineer (grabbing Nuka Cola + Torch Courier for a slower win. You can also use Storm Kiln Artist + Chain of Acid + Tamiyo's Safekeeping/Indestructible Permanent to win. Cards like Claim the Firstborn become double removal. Treasure Nabber can steal opponents' rocks to sac them and then kill something Freestrider Lookout just ramps you every turn. I feel like the submitted deck is kind of durdley. Not really committing to anything but a long game. Erinis biggest weakness is the lack of card advantage, not being able to use the normal green draw engines well. And that it is like you said VERY table warping. My wife outright refuses to play against it.

A few videos ago, I mentioned I was building a Zaxara deck that was trying to do too many things - I finally figured out that what I really like about the deck was not having power cards that could make Zaxara's output as cranked as possible. Instead, it was having a suite of cards that cared about me playing noncreatures to create creature tokens, a suite of discount givers, and just the right amount of X spells to give me that hit of sweet sweet X heaven. Now, the 'hydra' is the deck itself, where the other heads are these suites that merely do a part of what Zaxara does, and it feels just right!

(Kinda) Hot take: Lands is the worst mechanical design of MTG. It adds an insane amount of RNG on a game that is already full of RNG thanks to the draw mechanic. There is a good reason why every single newer TCG tend to get away from that kind of mechanic and just default on having a flat mana base increase each turn. Legend of Runeterra does it very well by having an gems wich act as overspill for unused mana on top of it and the old WoW tcg had a pretty great system where any card could be played face down as a "land" (but still had some dedicated land, called quests, that came with an upside compared to face down cards).

While EDH being the self-balancing format, powerlevel still matters if a player can archenemy and eat all interaction while still keeping his engine going. If you can 1 vs 3 everyone despite them interacting, your deck is simply not suited for a certain powerlevel. And it's a fairly broad rule tbh, because your deck needs way more than just be "better" to archenemy 1 vs 3.

This is a pretty cool project. The idea of creating a controlled pool of decks that are balanced against each other in a well maintained meta to be played in casual settings would be pretty cool to do in addition to standard casual play where players can focus on more creative deck ideas. I think having that kind of deck pool at the ready is also an amazing tool to use for teaching new players how to play in a game environment, whether Multiplayer FFA or 1v1, that standardizes deck power and board/game complexity.

13:14- Hearing the hard J sound here made my eye twitch just a little, lol. His name is actually pronounced "Yahn Yahnsen." It's a Dutch pronunciation and it's basically their version of the name "John." The surname is likewise the Dutch version of "Johnson." (Yes, this would make him, "Jan, son of Jan"). He was originally a character from the video game Baldur's Gate 2 and his name is said aloud in a number of lines of dialogue.

Buying bulk commons is admittedly a bit of a pain in the ass, but the serious answer is that if you live in the United States, do the following: 1. throw the list into TCGPlayer 2. hit "optimize", turning off exact printings 3. pick the TCGDirect cart. You want as much of the order as possible reasonably priced from TCGDirect 4. comb through the TCGDirect stuff and look for cards that are poorly priced, i.e. where only foil or otherwise expensive printings are there. Most of the deck should be under 50 cents per card, with a handful of protection spells being in the $0.75-1.50 range 5. look for any non-TCGDirect stuff that's in a package of less than 5 items 6. find replacements for the cards you singled out that didn't have good listings. This is a deck of bulk commons, you'll be able to find very similar replacement cards for most things. I used scryfall to find similar options and then double checked in TCGPlayer that each one had a reasonably priced printing on TCGDirect I did this about a week ago and in 15-20 minutes the cart was $28. I imagine it could go as low as $25 with a bit more massaging of the cart.

@@salubrioussnail I am well aware of TCGplayer. That deck list optimized to around a $65-70 purchase as of 6/5/2024, and that is allowing for damaged cards as well. What wound up happening was I got the card total down to $30-35, but the shipping total was $30-35 as well. I am struggling to believe that you got the price down to $28 a week ago, with the realities of shipping and tax, and am still looking for an actual $25 option or proof of any kind. Would my local gamestore(s) fish the cards out for that cheap even? I guess I will have to ask. I already own a good 20+ of the cards, but that's beside the point.

this is (I think) the only video of yours that I've rewatched multiple times. The way that you talk about the psychology around the deck really interests me and it gets me thinking about my own weird deck and how it works. I have a hydra kindred deck with Vorinclex Monstrous Raider as the commander. I don't really know why but it wins most of its games despite being really unbalanced and I think it's similar to the Xyris deck. My playgroup knows that it's a threat, but they still think of it as the threat it was a turn or two ago. A lot of my cards are seemingly innocuous "infrastructure" that doesn't really do anything until I pay 2 green and suddently have a 16/16 hydra on the board. I want to make a video like this one about it and dig into how it works. Anyway, good video and it gets me thinking. 10/10

I picked up Quick Draw this weekend after putting this deck back on the shelf, then I went back a couple days later and picked this one up because I was still thinking about it. Quick Draw slaps but this deck is mid. I'm thinking about possibly doing what you did as it seems the natural path and it was what I was thinking about doing, but then it ends up similar to my Satoru Umezawa deck. Another option is to run Ukima and Cazur but then I'm focusing maybe more on counters? Which is what my Kibo deck does, and my Aeve deck. Ghalta and Mavren too. woof

Hey funny Snail man, can you do a video about board wipes? and if you even need any in creature based decks? So often i see videos that says you need to run 4-5 board wipes as a rule but i am not so sure. I am also new to edh.
@salubrioussnail
@salubrioussnail 2 күн бұрын
I made a video discussing board wipes back in September, but I didn't really touch on how many people should play. Whether or not they should be played in creature-heavy decks really depends on what sort of deck it is. If you're running an aggressive deck that can consistently threaten player kills by turn 6 or 7 (in a mid-power game), you might only want to add 1-2, or even none at all if you're playing a Voltron deck. On the other hand, if you're playing a slower, grindier deck that is likely to get overtaken by other players on board at some points in the game, running 3+ board wipes becomes a good idea.

i had a deck using Xyris as commander - was fun, i played it around drawing cards, ramping up and finishing enemies off via mass spell damage in their faces OR using those little snake tokens to buff them and win using those creatures for lethal damage and even winning via commander damage - bite weak players at start so all but the strongest guy draw cards and then just couple more attacks to win the game. I recommend it for friendly tables.
