The conducting is so out of control and over the top. It’s actually detracting from the students’ playing. Most of them are ignoring her. The role of the conductor is not to get in the way of the musicians or the music. It should always be to reinforce, refine, guide, motivate, and consolidate. It’s not supposed to be a dramatic performance that’s contrived. The students did a good job overall. The performance was underwhelming and lacking detail because the conductor got in the way of the musical production. Self aggrandizement should be avoided on the podium. I’m a little disappointed in this performance, especially considering the talented musicians. Oh well. It’s a missed opportunity to make something really special and memorable.

There are so many great youth orchestras around the world, and these kids are right up there with the best of them. What a joy to watch and listen to them play this Copland suite.

Sir Andrew died a few months after this performance ... on April 20, 2024. He was a superb conductor and programmer. These amazing "kids" were lucky to have worked with him.

Who mixed this into the garbage can? The lead trumpet player is blowing his brains out and his trumpet mic is 1/3 the volume of his vocal mic. And the vocal is too loud, as are the drums. The rest of the band sounds muffled. I can't believe you didn't stop two bars in and fix the problem. I really can't believe you posted this. To quote Buddy Rich, "You're nothin' but a bunch of B.S. high school jive artists."

My first introduction to this magnificent piece is when Emerson, Lake & Palmer released their recording of it back in the early 70s. Loved it ever since.
