The prototype 5200 joystick was reportedly much better. But someone decided to do some cost cutting before release, which ruined it.

I had an armory full of handheld games. Tiger, Nintendo and lesser known companies.

I know the controllers were not good quality, but I can't be the only one that think the design of them looks amazing. Looked ahead of its time.

I love the naming schemes for the machines. 2600x2=5200. 5200+2600=7800. Not to mention the 2600 name was from phone phreaking. 2600 hz. The tone that let you call long distance for free.

Some things I just shake my head at now are video game conspiracy theories and some supposed ephemeral video game "crash" in 1983... there was no noticeable crash. The games just kept coming. And more and more. It never ended. I don't know how this hoax began.

American Sega genesis had way better advertisement that's why everyone went with the genesis and didn't hold back when it came too mature games the guy who was trying to make the genesis sell well was on the right track but japanese idiots didn't like the idea and didn't care for the genesis at all and wanted to be so damn greedy so it wasn't working at so well with them

I like the fact that Atari brought back the telephone button pad on the controller for their last system, the Jaguar.

Perhaps the biggest problem, which oddly was not mentioned in the video as a problem, was that Atari was trying to recapitalize on arcade games already on the 2600. Same game, slight change. Was the cost of the upgrade worth it? And unlike Coleco and Mattel, both of which positioned their releases on new and untapped games, Atari used the same games with minor system localization changes from their computer line, which you did mention.

Finally, someone who credits the Adam, and the home computer surge as its failure instead of the alleged 'crash', which only occurred in the North American market and something that almost everyone was oblivious to. People who didn't live back then have very little idea of what exactly took place.

Supposedly, NFL Football was originally supposed to be the pack-in game. Don't know why they didn't go with that. It would've probably put Intellivisions in a LOT more homes.

I didn't get into intellivision until 1984. Sears was blowing their super video arcade out for $40 and my mom bought me one. It was my favorite console for years afterwards. I still have it somewhere.

the issue with colecovision and intellivision was the controllers. they were really bad. what is nice today is that we can use other controllers.

A little extra media from this demo reel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5x2qMtq3qi6aIE.htmlsi=wFTAR22PbI9TXRJk The company I worked for (2Gen) was asked to make some 3D assets and commercial for the system - however the system looks a bit different.

I think you're spot on when you said while the library is small, there are many excellent titles. My top 5 would definitely include Moon Patrol, Robotron, and Defender. There so many to choose from to round out -- Qix, Dig Dug, Vanguard, Jungle Hunt, Scramble... so many excellent arcade ports. In 2024, I have access to digital joysticks for the original hardware so that makes the experience more optimal than the OEM controller.

It may look terrible now but that's because there's so much more to compare it to. When this came out, there wasn't much of anything else but those red-dot LED games. So this was pretty sophisticated by comparison.

I remember kneeling in front of my friend's TV to play his NES, for the first time, and he handed me the controller, and the D-Pad seemed like an obvious downgrade to the joystick to me, initially. I thought it seemed weak and wouldn't lemd itself to quick direction changes like a joystick. That assumption kept me in the dark ages for at least a couple extra years...

It’s hard to think as a consumer during 1984 as I was a kid. So I really didn’t think there was a crash. After the 2600 I was more into computers and I told my parents how I learned some basic programming and wanted a computer for home. They bought me an Atari 800 and I just continue playing games on that. If the 7800 did come out in 84 I would like to think it would do well mainly because of the backwards compatibility to 2600, as that was one of the big complaints on the 5200. But again I wasn’t a parent during this time so maybe I would have just been done with video games all together.

Technically, the XE was ahead of it's time. I am sure software, OS's, disk drives, RAM upgrades, etc., would have come a little later in it's lifespan if it was allowed to mature. Towards the end of it's useful life as a game console, it could have been a great 8-bit general-purpose computer.
