For this particular piece the tuning is the 'old tuning'? (gdafcg) When I look for E. Gaultier tablature, I often find in description that it is for 11 string baroque lute, but here you seem to be playing the so called 'renaissance' lute
@jeffreynoonan369313 күн бұрын
Very perceptive! Yes, "viel ton" for sure. There are a number of these early Baroque pieces (especially courantes) in the "old tuning"--Cherbury Lute Book, for example, has a number of these and some pieces appear in several manuscript collections. And some have concordances with other pieces in the "new tuning" (d-minor tuning) for 11-cs lute. In some ways, these French "Baroque lute" pieces in the old, Renaissance tuning are an important part of the transitional nature of lute music in the early 17th century--very much in the new style (style brisee, courantes, characteristic bass motion, etc.) but utilize the old tuning. Transitional in many ways. The Lute Society of America published a very nice edition of a half-dozen of these courantes in the old tuning. Peter Danner edited this little collection. Well worth a look.

@@jeffreynoonan3693 Is that the edition you learned this piece from? Many thanks for your answer

I honestly do not recall which edition I used but I’d bet it was Peter’s LSA edition. If you’re looking for the piece, start there

Very tough violin parts. Enjoyed the performance and the performers. The French seemed to have a big influence on the world stage. It’s ironic how beautiful the harmonies were, despite their background. Merci!

Technically and musically it's of a very high level, but let's remember that 3 x 1 musicians at a distance take away the harmony and synergy of live, the soul of this piece is the osmosis of the whole playing in the same place ! Imagine yourself in the halls of mirrors of the Palace of Versailles, at home, here in France! damned Covid_19! Listen to this Romanian quartet playing the same piece in the church of Cluj Napoca (Romania) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLt3ja6K3NSpaas.html

Excellent performances and great content! Please note the term "port" is pronounced "poorsht" or "poersht," much like the auto "porsche," but with a "t" at the end. It is a one syllable word and is a "Gàidhlig" or Scottish Gaelic word.

After whom is the archlute model copied? Trying to find the original for ages!
@jeffreynoonan36933 жыл бұрын
Hi, Heiko--Thanks for your note and question. The archlute was built by Robert Lundberg in 1976-77. I purchased the instrument not too long ago and the instrument came with no original paperwork. For a short time, I owned 2 archlutes by Lundberg--this one and a less ornate one, also built in 1977 with nearly the same dimensions. Although I had copies of some original paperwork with the less-ornate instrument, it had no information about the original instrument from which Lundberg designed his. I am wondering if you might find some information in Lundberg's book on building historical lutes. luth.org/books/historical-lute-construction/ I'd be happy to take pictures and make measurements, if that will help you. Good luck! jeff

@@jeffreynoonan3693 I do believe that it's modeled after Christoph Koch, Venise 1654 E.546 with a "budget" generic upper peg box. Lutenist Monica pustilnik plays almost the same.

Dr. Metz performed on a recently constructed fortepiano by Paul McNulty who modeled this instrument on extant fortepianos by Anton Walter, a leading builder of keyboard instruments in the late-eighteenth-century. This new instrument features a case in patterned Nigerian mahogany with Empire-period decoration in gold leaf.
