Andy M Stewart is a terrifically massive loss to folk and Scottish music he leaves us with a catalogue of songs stories and music which will never fade with age time and relativity to coin the title of one of Phil Cunninghams albums

Andy M. Stewart was one of the first Celtic musicians that I listened to, and he continues to be the foremost figure in my mind who represents that genre. The world is a smaller place without him in it.

Brings me to tears every time I listen to this song. Having lost my dear daughter 20 months ago, I know the feeling of intense loss. I do hope there is such a place as the Land O' the Leal for her and Andy and Johnny"s sake. May they all rest in peace. Such a wonderful band was Silly Wizard. I have their recordings to remember them by. Thanks for sharing.

Silly Wizard were the best. I listen to lots of Scottish and Irish music, there's plenty of good musicians out there, but none of them can blaze through a tune and get my feet moving like Silly Wizard. They had the incredible speed but also the musicality . . . just amazing. I'm sorry about Andy Stewart.

So I've come here because this song is mentioned in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. Having heard it I don't really understand why he chose this song for that particular scene, but I am glad to have found this song, because it is beautiful. Also thank you for your extensive background info on both the song and this recording in the description!

I remember seeing them, only but once, in washington dc in 1986? What an incredible, incredibly infectious show. To hsve heard them for maybe 6 or 7 years and then seeing them live. It's like seeing a storm on tv and seeing a storm for real, the wind is howling, the light is only from the lightning in the sky, your skin is wet and cold and your heart is beating like it is on fire...man alive what an experience!

He really had a good sense of humor in introducing songs. This is such a beautiful version of a great song. I wonder if the waters of the Bann act as an aphrodesiac or is it just its reputation. If I were a girl, I would avoid the Bann River or only go there in groups to avoid such young men, who are probably all flocking there in hopes of finding a naive young woman.

I gave to that fundraiser. I know he died very soon after I gave to it. I thought: if the family uses it for their funeral expenses, or even if they just use my money to treat themselves to a nice dinner out to remember Andy by, that's all right with me. I hope they did. I'm so grateful to Andy and the band for all the great music they gave us. RIP.

I JUST LISTENED FOR THE FIRST TIME TO ANDY M. STEWART SING, "THE LAND O' THE LEAL...AND I CRIED WHILST ANDY SANG AND WHEN JOHN PLAYED BEAUTIFULLY THE FIDDLE. AS I STUDIED ANDY AS HE WAS SINGING, I COULD ACTUALLY FEEL HIS HEART IN HIS WORDS. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING...THIS WORLD NEEDS MORE OF WHAT ANDY MODELED SO WELL, IN HIS REALNESS, HIS WARMTH, HIS HUMOR/QUICK WIT, HIS SIMPLISTICALLY PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE, AND OF COURSE HIS HEART WAS HEARD IN EVERY WORD HE SANG SO BEAUTIFULLY! I LOVE THE UNIQUENESS OF THE TONE AND QUALITY OF HIS VOICE. HIS TONE RESONATED FROM HIS GENTLE HEART. IT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE SO AMAZINGLY GIFTED AND TALENTED, AND OF COURSE HIGHLY REGARDED FOR ALL OF HIS LOVELY CHARACTER TRAITS WAS TAKEN SO YOUNG. SADLY, I NEVER MET ANDY, BUT I BELIEVE WE WILL MEET IN THE LAND O' THE LEAL. I CAN PICTURE ANDY SINGING TO JESUS AND TO MY GRAND BABY GIRL IN HEAVEN AND TO ALL MY LOVED ONES AND EVERYONE. HIS VOICE WILL BE HEARD IN HEAVEN THROUGH ETERNITY! ALTHOUGH I AM AN AMERICAN (BORN AND RAISED)...MY MOTHER WAS A GORDON, SO I HAVE SOME SCOTTISH BLOOD IN ME FOR SURE! MARINE, SGT T.R. GORDON, WHO WAS STATIONED IN SCOTLAND MANY YEARS AGO, HAS ADOPTED SCOTLAND AS HIS TRUE "HOMELAND."...HE AUTHORED AND PUBLISHED A BRILLIANT BOOK~~"A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY THROUGH SCOTLAND" BY T.R. GORDON...CHECK IT OUT! TIM, (MARINE) SENT ME THIS VIDEO OF ANDY AND I WILL FOREVER LOVE THIS SONG AND AGREE WITH SGT T.R. GORDON OF THE USMC, IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL~~THANK YOU TIM, AND THANK YOU, DEAR ANDY, FOR SHARING YOUR VOICE, YOUR HEART, YOURSELF, WITH THE WORLD! GOD BE WITH ANDY'S FAMILY.~~BEV~~USA, VIRGINIA BLESSINGS~~

Jan borrowing Dan's account here. I was at the Atlanta concert where this was filmed, possibly the best concert I've been to in my entire life. I saw Silly Wizard twice in Atlanta, and Andy Stewart with Manus Lunny and Sileas once, and Relativity twice. The Celtic music scene in Atlanta in the 80s and 90s was incredible if you looked for it. We also had Theatre Gael dedicated to performing plays by Scots, Irish, and Welsh playwrights. This song, combining Johnny's sweet sweet fiddle with Andy's heartfelt singing brings tears every time. It even inspired me to include the promise to be "leal" in our wedding vows, because to me Andy's explanation deepens the meaning beyond loyal/faithful to something that's just good and trustworthy through and through, which is how I feel about our marriage. Silly Wizard and Relativity were leal bands. God bless Johnny, Andy, Michael, and those who still miss them.

This is so cool! i used to hear songs like this in the early 50s when I was very small. Things were a lot simpler back then and people seem to be more interested in finding joy in their lives and singing about it. It doesn’t seem like people wanna do that too much these days. Thanks for putting this up here I really liked it. I think I’ll play that on my birthday every year until I cross over and celebrate with Andy on the other side. I sure do miss him.
