Bottom line was Billy Batts wasn't alone. There were witnesses to the beef between him and Tommy and then he disappears that night. Like Carlito (Carlito's Way) says, "I know the Mob, I worked with them, They are gonna read this with their eyes closed". Tommy did this. Whether or not his partners played a part is unknown but the beef was with Tommy so Tommy has to pay. End of story. If Tommy had any patience he could have taken him out a couple of weeks later and been free and clear of any wrong doing.

Why wasn’t he killed in the movie? Because the movie was based on true events, and Jimmy “the gent” Burke was a real man who went to prison. Don’t you know the true story? Why are you suggesting the Movie as it stands is more important than History itself?

I believe the only reason he wasnt killed immediately is money. He was an earner for the Varrio crew and Tommy was expendable. Tommy being killed made the Varrio crew look like they had carried out the honour killing without hurting their earning potential

And Jimmy was a shady guy. He probably threw Tommy under the boss to save himself same way he tried it with Henry Hill and his wife. He killed off almost all his guys after the heist to keep most of the money.

I’ve wondered this too. He’s an associate and would thus seemingly have no right to do anything to a made guy. He’s the lowest guy on the totem pole no matter how much he brings in. And as far as I’ve heard, associates have to kick up most of their earnings.

I disagree with this logic immensely. Jimmy was not even a made guy. If they suspected he was involved, they would have killed him right away. But Billy Batts' friends and witnesses saw both Jimmy and Henry try to de-escalate the situation after Tommy stormed off. They could not prove Jimmy or Henry's involvement, but Tommy was a hot-head and clearly was involved in his death.

This is what happened: (and this comes from a documentary I watched plus some other YT expert clips) Jimmy Conway was running an old bookmaking operation that Billy bats used to run before he was incarcerated. Billy wanted it back once he was released, but Jimmy was making way more money with it than Billy ever did, which benefited both the Gambino and lucchese families. Also, Thomas de Simone (Devito in the movie) was a sociopathic hot head that killed people for fun, he was already under fire for having committed several ridiculously flamboyant murders. Ultimately, Henry and Jimmy were considered more valuable to the Lucchese Family than Tommy. Combine that with the fact that Tommy later tried to rape Henry's wife (who Paul vario had been having an affair with behind Henry's back) and Tommy's fate was sealed.

I think the whole scene was bullshit put into the movie just for dramatic effect and to make the female more significant. The scene makes no sense, if he wanted to kill her, he never would have let her leave. This scene is made up nonsense. It never happened.

Jimmy was a good earner. Paulie allowed Tommy to get wacked because of the un sanctioned wack on a made guy but also because Tommy tried to have his way with Henry Hills wife Karen. Coincidentally, Paulie was having an affair with Karen Hill during this time. If you notice in the movie, Paulie went to talk to Henry about moving back in with Karen to stay face. Notice in the scene Paulie said he would talk to Karen, he knows how to talk to her, especially to her. This move keeps Karen around and gives Paulie reason to see Karen multiple times . Also, if anyone higher than Paulie finds this fact out, everyone gets wacked.

I have a feeling the reason they killed Tommy was due to the fact that not only did he kill a made man but at the same time he was too much of a loose bullet literally to the point where it makes a lot of sense that the higher-ups let want him eliminated immediately in some way due to the fact that he could get in the way of how the mob does it deal with somebody and just for Tommy to fuck it up because of his anger issues

It is more likely that Jimmy was making a lot of money for the higher ups and that bought him time. If you bring in enough money and are not creating a ton of risk the mob will tolerate many things. Tommy was big risk because of his violent tendencies, the risk was justified by the reward. Remember, it is just business
