Thank you Romano for the video and thanks to Willem and Freddie. The tree on the rock that Willem has referred to was a rooted cutting from the small leave "congo" variety that I bought from Rudi Adam in 1999. Tannie Dot Hennegan assisted me in the design in 2000. The rock was collected near Griekwastad in 1989.

is juniper'n goeie eerste bonsai?
@bonsaiwithromano
@bonsaiwithromano 4 ай бұрын

Hi, this was a cool video and a great effort, thank you. I enjoyed this experiment and I'm also surprised at the result of perlite. I use perlite in my mix. I've noticed that perlite shrinks, even after a short period of time. So, when I start off with a soil mix that includes perlite it's nice and coarse, then after a few months the perlite shrinks and i end up with a finer soil mix, have you found the same?
@bonsaiwithromano
@bonsaiwithromano 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience with Perlite! It's insightful to hear about your initial impressions. It's true that Perlite's water retention capabilities can be beneficial, but it's important to consider potential drawbacks, such as its tendency to promote algae growth in shaded, damp areas. Use Perlite sparingly , as its lightweight nature may cause it to spill out of pots easily. I appreciate your feedback and look forward to hearing more about your journey with Perlite in the future!

What about akadama, pumice, scoria, molar clay ? The more known components for bonsai soil, or more common for professionals ? I'm sure your trees are fine, they will grow in anything but for bonsai you need specific things that have been found out through hundreds and hundreds of years.....
@bonsaiwithromano
@bonsaiwithromano 4 ай бұрын
You are 100% correct, there are loads of more known soil components available. I did the experiment on these six soil components as they are more commonly found and available to me plus they don’t cost a arm and a leg. Pumice, akadama and the rest all need to be imported and are limited. When you are starting out and not ready to spend loads of money on soil these six soils will be you best option. I always test all my own growing media and fertilizers as the species that we use as bonsai are not all Japanese species and there has not been hundreds of years of trials run on these region specific species. Climate also has a huge rol to play, in my home town we get temperatures up to 40 degree celsius in our long summers (very hot and dry) and our winters are cold and wet. It all boils down to basic horticultural practices and how you choose to apply them to your bonsai trees based on your regional and local enviroment.

Nice trees! I used to collect native strangler figs in Costa Rica and try to bonsai them. Unfortunately I had to move back to the states and I don't have any trees now. But I want some! Ficus are my favorites but I love lots of tropical trees. However I live in Virginia now so tropical stuff needs to come inside for the winter. They could stay with my stinky little plants in my indoor garden and grow tent.

Hi there! 🌿 Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! It's truly heartwarming to connect with fellow tree enthusiasts. Your experience with native strangler figs in Costa Rica sounds absolutely amazing, and it's impressive that you tried bonsai-ing them. I can imagine how challenging it must be to transition from tropical to Virginia weather! Ficus trees are indeed captivating, and it's fantastic that you have an indoor garden and grow tent to nurture your green friends during the winter. It's always a joy to share our passion for trees and plants, and I'm thrilled to have you as part of this community.

Hi R, hope all is well. How do you know there is an iron deficiency? Or per say a certain deficiency??
@bonsaiwithromano
@bonsaiwithromano 6 ай бұрын
Deficiencies can be seen on the leaves of a tree. Iron deficiency is easy to spot yellowish/ pale leaves with the major vains of the leaf still green. You can search the internet for the deficiency chart it's a very helpful visual add. Note that if you feed your tree regularly with a well balance fertilizer you won't necessarily get major deficiencies. Also deficiencies on trees normally come in pair of more than one is visible on the leaves so I try and see which is more prominent treat that and then come back a week later to see if there are any other deficiencies that need to be treated.

Nice! Beautiful looking tree. I am quite fond of Ficuses myself. I live in a tropical country, would you have any tips on how to make sure it's doing well lomg term? Thank you.

Great! I have always loved Ficus bonsai but only recently started focusing on refinement as I have a few very good looking ficus trees. What I found works well for refinement and health is seasonal pruning at the start of the growing season, defoilation in summer and repotting in free draining soil. They also respond well to weekly fertilizer in lower doses.

I actually liked this time lapse video. You have done an outstanding job transforming the juniper into a very nice bonsai. It shows a lot of skill. This variety (procumbens nana) is an excellent plant for beginners to work on. They are very forgiving and have incredible potential. I'll bet this tree is stunning now.
