Great work! The most realistic River sim I've ever seen on KZfaq. This is just for reference cause I'm planning on buying a new machine for Houdini. How long was the sim time for High Quality Cache and what was your PC spec used for this scene? I'm trying to cache the HQ sim with 0.01 Particles Separation and it took me about 30m/frame which could take days to complete a 120 Frames of simulation.
@flyzvfx8 ай бұрын
It's definitely too much. On my PC it took 3-4 hours total maybe, I don't remember exactly was too long ago and definitely with a machine not too good other than having 64/128 GB of ram. But definitely not 30 mins per frame. How many particles do you get going to 0.01 particle separation? Maybe you go out of RAM or if you changed the river bed maybe you get too many particles
@sleepingonthecouch958 ай бұрын
@@flyzvfx with proxy sim cache to Initial State, it was 300 millions particles. Lol, I gotta lower the particle sep to 0.02 after that so my PC doesn't explode. I have only 64GB of Ram with 11700k. I think not enough Ram is the issue as you address here.

Yes, and if someone doesnt want to built it by themselves there is the video. I gave it for free or almost to many students who needed and asked it, as for the other project files. If people/studio werent using it for commercial projects almost identically as it is profiting hundreds if not thousands, it would still be at a lower price

I don't know enough Unreal to tell you that it's possible but I wouldn't see why not. For sure you will have no problems with the ripples and splashes textures. Does it handle also well a lot of particles?

hey I got the file off gumroad and the scatter doesn't work. Please could you help?
Hey doest the river loop? I want to put it into a game engine in real time. Thanks!
@flyzvfx10 ай бұрын
It doesn't but you can make it loop. In comp is easy but if you want to do it in 3d you just need in a range of 20-30 frames to blend in the particles before meshing. So let's say you are at the frame END-30, here with a random threshold I guess you can start to reintroduce the particles from the initial frame. Over the following 30 frames you will delete all the particles from the end of the sim and you will fade in all the particles from the start. Never tried but I'm pretty sure it's going to work nicely with the meshing after. Thats the first thing I would try. Let me know if it works

Mille gratie Andrea! Sei un mito per me. Thank you very much! Very generous of you to give your time and knowledge. The video is not long and it would be very nice of you to make more tutorials. Ex - Rain and Ripples This project is 3 years old (I think) and the technology has evolved a lot in this time. Do you think this kind of "Houdini-River" project, cinematic realism, can now be done with Unreal Engine for terrain env and DaVinci Resolve for compositing, color grading and sound fx, ? I ask this because both UE and Resolve are free.
@flyzvfx11 ай бұрын
Hey, that's actually something I wanted to test for a long time: rendering the enviroment with Unreal Engine and using that render as a "plate" and add on top FX rendered in Houdini/Mantra. The reason is to save render time, if you have only one workstation to work and render with. UE is becoming better and better and with the implementation of megascan you can create enviroments easily and render them quick. But the main FX elements (for example in this case the river/foam) for what I have seen you still need to render them in Houdini probably because I haven't seen it yet the same level of quality, but I could be wrong because I have not much experience in UE shading. Of course you can then use DaVinci for compositing, the software really doesnt matter much. What matters for comp is the technique. As long as you can do color corrections you are fine.

Amazing. Any idea if it's possible to render/convert points to vdb in third party renderers like Redshift etc? For creating white water or snow effect like you shown here. Thank You.
@flyzvfx11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if is possible with the recent versions of third parties. In an older version of Redshift I was looking for it but there weren't any options similar to this render time conversion, which is a little bit annoying since doing it this way you can retain a lot of details and also having some subsurface/reflective kind of look. And in Mantra is also fast to render
