Amazing comp, and big thanks for the explainers between show trailers. The commercials were nice, too (Freshen Up was real, younguns, a gum with goop inside, lol). I wish I could help you with "We've Got Each Other", except that I've seen this trailer before, I think from the RwDt09 channel you cite in the Description. Nothing useful to add except that the writers and producers must've learned the limits of how much America was going to tolerate "realistic-looking", hideous people in a romantic dramedy. That these shows failed is unsurprising. Only one show, "Quark", stands out as something that coulda been a contender. I think it was supposed to be a cynical "Star Trek", and it might've worked if it hadn't been for the Osmonds and Wonder Woman. Which leads me to my next remark: TV was clearly in a holding pattern, waiting for the 70s to end, waiting for the fascination with the Osmonds to end, waiting for variety shows to die, waiting for people to tire of "Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", and all things late 50s/early 60s. Well, it wasn't THIS year. Yeah, "Star Wars" was new and influential, but space stuff was expensive (hence the failure of "Quark", no doubt). Elements of a few of these shows, however, would find life in much later TV series. The two that stood out for me: "James at 15 (16)" and "Whatever Happened to the Class of '65?" The 80s and 90s would mine the "realistic look at teenagers" vein to varying degrees of success. "Class of '65" is the grubby, unemployed dad to shows like "Family Ties", "thirtysomething", and "The Wonder Years". But most of these shows are reheated ideas, like 3-day-old leftovers. I counted at least 4 shows about Young Women Making It On Their Own, the network geniuses evidently forgetting that "Mary Tyler Moore" spent the past 7 years doing just that and was no longer even in the Top 20 by the time the show hurriedly quit before it got cancelled. Shows about 19th century rural America were rapidly going out of vogue as the decade wore on. Variety shows were having death gurgles in their forgotten beds. But most of these shows were the things I just described. And you know what? It got worse next year!

A great read! Thank you for that! I had a 'thirtysomething" t-shirt, and you literally named my personal murderers' row of TV shows that I loved the most in the late '80s. I also have a bit of a soft spot for 'James at 15 (16)', especially that episode with Terri Nunn. I do think that 'Family' is becoming a bit of a lost gem. 'Lou Grant' sort of set the tone for '80s shows like 'Hill Street Blues' going forward as well. I'm a tad surprised that neither show has had a (full) DVD boxed set released; nor have they been streamed (at least to my knowledge). Whenever I periodically search to see if certain shows have been uploaded, 'We've Got Each Other', 'Husbands, Wives & Lovers', and 'The Waverly Wonders' are the three that I look for first and come up empty. I'm sure that 2 of the 3 (or all 3) are going to be pretty terrible, I just want to see it for myself. Again, I appreciate your post. I read it twice!

Same here, generally on Saturdays. I'll always watch a horror film from the '70s in the afternoon, one (non-horror) '70s film in the evening (generally the ones that aren't talked about as much anymore but you can find on Tubi), and a TV movie from the '70s. If I dip into the '80s, it's generally only stuff from 1980-83.

In '78/79 I was 14-15 y.o. and so prime time TV was quickly getting out-prioritized by girls and clothes and maybe listening to record albums or going to the movies to "make out". TV was suddenly mostly kids stuff, or for boring old people who's lives were nearly over anyway. The easy part was having only three networks competing for a few highly-contested spots, so it was very easy to decide what was worthwhile or a waste of time. Now that you can watch anything anywhere anytime it takes a lot of the fun out of it, plus so many people just watch alone on their pathetic 6-inch handheld screen, there is virtually no social element involved. It used to be that you would go to school and before class discuss with your friends what was on TV last night. Or you'd go to the movies with your friends and all sit together and then go somewhere for pizza afterwards and talk about the movie. Nearly all of that is gone now (thanks a lot Steve Jobs) which is a terrible tragedy. Anyway the 78-79 season the only TV shows I might have watched were Welcome Back Kotter, Three's Company, Starsky & Hutch, and maybe Happy Days which was already losing it's touch by then. So it's funny and kinda sad to see these short-lived shows which were either just lame or were up against stiff competition.

Mary Tyler Moore (or her husband) had her own production company. The sitcom had ended with everyone at the TV station getting fired. What would have been a better idea for Moore would have been to have her continue the Mary Richards character in another setting, with, maybe, some of the cast members back from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Of course, the other major actors had moved on, or were about to do so.

"Mary" aired in two versions: first as a straight variety show, then as a sitcom about a variety show. It should have been called "Mistake".

Maybe if the theme songs didn’t completely suck, some shows may have succeeded. In my area, we only had one TV station and consequently they were an affiliate of one major national broadcasting network. Meaning that as a kid we only had, on Saturday mornings, toons from one company. We didn’t even get Sesame Street. Meaning I only saw evening shows from a single network and it sucked when reruns began. What you get for living on a large ranch that was about 35 miles from a town with a population over 200. 😜

I was 15 years old during this TV season. I must have been watching the longer-running series, since most of these are unfamiliar to me. However, I'm pretty sure I watched at least the first episode of "Mary." And since I came from a large family and watched anything that had a large brood of kids in it, I can remember watching "The MacKenzies Of Paradise Cove" on its irregularly scheduled nights. And, of course, nobody during that period missed seeing the famous Dr. Pepper commercial with David Naughton. The Nestle Souptime commercial also seems familiar to me.

I was all of 5 this season. I guess I was the only person here who watched Born Free. I had no idea Diana Muldaur was in it. Maybe that's somehow the root of me not liking her? Though no idea what she did on the show that I didn't like. I know I also watched Planet of the Apes as one of "my" shows - which would be stuff my parents never would have watched themselves. Most other stuff that I watched was mostly what my parents were into like Rockford Files and The Waltons.
