This guy seems pretty good, he should think about starting a music career.

This is just bad piano-playing, technically and musically. I respect those who admire this kind of pianism and envy those who find it enjoyable. Being oblivious of how Cortot, Rubinstein or Horowitz treated this masterpiece is bliss indeed, because their long singing melodic lines, with only a slight and subtle application of rubato, are haunting. Most piano students at the diploma level learn this etude and struggle to get it right. Lang sets a perfect example of how not to do it. There is no extended melodic line because of the wilful rubato. Chopin's music was written for the salon and its refined patrons, so the overt exhibition of emotions, including swooning and ecstasy, is out of place. By the way, when practising this piece at a slow and steady speed, one must be struck by its resemblance to a Bach prelude. Chopin's touch of genius was to overlay the repetitive finger exercise with a flute-like (i.e. fresh and pure) melody.

Sorry to be pedantic here but this lovely etude by Chopin is not a SONG. It is a composition for piano. Songs have words or lyrics. Having listened to many great pianists playing this difficult study I think that the early recording by Alfred Cortot is just magnificent.

He has natural musicality lol, you may not like his interpretation, but saying he isn’t naturally musical is ignorant and objectively wrong.

Don’t watch him! If you do, you’ll think this guy is a huge ham and super annoying. Close your eyes and just listen, then you will hear the artist who plays with tenderness and emotion, but without the nauseating theatrics.

Not my favorite version of this from him (a little rushed) but he always has a wonderful viewpoint in his interpretations. I still like this very much but he is sublime in other versions. Regardless, Pletnev is easily one of my top 5 or 6 greatest pianists ever.
