The public mind for the stature of a given musician is surprisingly short. There are so many players here and gone. But we get tunnel-vision.

OK, but why? Still do not grasp the term - as it is used without discernment in so many unrelated contexts. Why, for example is it not "goodass"?

No one can play like Marc! I'm so agitated to see his new stuff, this is just great, the cats are killing it, Mr. Lewis is a prodigy! By the way folks make sure to check out Marc's book "Unstrung: Rants And Stories Of A Noise Guitarist," it's a collection of immensely poignant, ironic, witty stories, observations, memoirs, and musical essays that none of Ribot's fans should miss!

Boring, music for simple minds....

Bet you couldn't funk your way out of wet paper bag if your life depended on it. The rhythms my little wizzl. They are complex and difficult to render. But you wouldn't know that, cuz you can't hear it or feel it. Or play it. Stay with your mind-blowingly complicated prog rock and 12 tone composition or new age muzak or whatever it is you do. Much safer for you there. IT takes the a different kind of ability to funk and create interesting statements over a static one chord thing. Some can do it, some can't. The ones that can, Miles Davis called in the 70's 80's. Guys like Herbie Hancock Chick Corea Keith Jarrett Robin Ford John Scofield. Guys that can do "simple" and complex, simultaneously, This is a James Brown joint, and Marc is not going for a fully fused out extra dark and jazzy , very altered sound like Miles's 70's stuff, but it is the same ballpark, and with the same intention and spirit. To reach people with some easy to listen to, funky improvised music. to entertain a wider audience with a bit more accessible "jazz". Accessible is not necessarily boring or overly simple. It depends on the purveyor. What could you give us over a static dominant chord groove? Not much I'll bet. I bet you own r shit is boring as f--k and nobody listens to it. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe your shit is awesome and I'll eat my words. Go ahead. Give us a link. Put your money where your petty words come from. Your smack talking mouth. Put up or shut up. Let's hear you dazzling and complex melodies. come on with it .We're waiting with baited breath,

So many people go on about technical guitar skills like speed and scales and such, and while Ribot has buckets of that when he wants to utilize them, I find what characterizes him as one of the all-time greats is just his innate ability to know what notes and chords and bends sound perfect in all the right places...and the critical pauses between notes for emotional effect. That's what so many guitarists just aren't able to articulate in their solos, and that's what makes him one of a kind. Plus that killer tone! Keep giving it to us Marc! Oh, and please come tour up here in beautiful Vancouver Canada. We'd love to see you here. Peace.

Guess your comment pertains to players we have been graced to hear or see over the era of recorded music. But those are the foundations of musicality that you name. Many guitarists possess them across many styles.

I just saw this band last night, and it was AMAZING! Now Jeff Beck is gone, Marc may be the greatest living guitarist. I nominate him. The rest of the band are virtuoso players as well. This is the best Jazz I've heard live.
