One has to wonder what California's lawmakers were thinking when they came up with this brain dead idea to raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour. Restaurants sell food, not Rolex watches and billion dollar Yachts. Restaurants have extremely high operating costs, and of course Pizza Hut cannot afford to pay their delivery drivers $20 an hour and somehow remain profitable. Wages in the restaurant industry have gone way up in recent years, with the average restaurant worker here in St Louis earning $15 an hour plus to start; this is in contrast to the fact they only earned $10 an hour pre-covid. The result is restaurants shutting down all over St Louis. Those who dont fail are freezing hiring, operating with skeleton crews, and often closing early anytime its slow. The 24 hour IHOP around the corner from my home closes at like 8pm lol, this is despite the 24 hour sign right on the front door of the building. Delivery apps have already taken over pizza chains here in Missouri. Because of our current state employment laws, restaurants are only required to pay tipped employees like servers and delivery drivers $6 an hour, and no one in their right mind is going to work for that. People dont tip anymore either, these jobs are a lost cause. The result is those delivery apps taking over the industry, and they dont pay very well either. So many restaurants have failed here in St Louis that you'd have better odds of winning the powerball than actually finding a job at any local restaurant, the entire industry is falling apart. I spent the past 5 months looking for work, found nothing. If we were to raise our minimum wage here in MO to $20 an hour, there would surely be no restaurants left at all.
