Could you please help me with the following issue: my Canon R5C camera shuts down during video recording, the LCD screen goes dark, and the viewfinder also goes dark. When I switch the power to "OFF", the camera does not turn off. I have to remove the battery and reinsert it, after which the camera works for a while and then freezes again. This is very frustrating. What should I do in this situation?

Only with one of the EF-RF adapters, and even then it will only allow the R's APS-C mode, giving you around 11mp. So it will work with the adapter, but you'll lose some resolution. Not that 11MP is at all shabby!

Hi Arrian, I will probably switch from R5 to R5C because of the overheating issue (which is killing me on R5) I do both video and photography (wildlife only). Could you please tell me how big issue is the sound of the cooling system on R5C? When using shotgun mike on top? Second issue that troubles me is a also lack of sensor stabilization on R5C, how bit issue is it? I'm using RF lenses all with IS. I use tripod mostly but sometimes I have to hand hold 500mm ofc. Many thanks if you find a time to help me decide! Tomas
@NaikMedia

Great question, thanks for posting =) In terms of the sound of the fan, there are several settings you can choose: Always active (high, medium, low, automatic) or active while in standby (similar options as the always active, but it only turns on when the camera is NOT recording - so the fan turns off when you press record so it doesn't interfere with audio on the video file). However, I keep mine on constantly - not great for battery life - but never once has it overheated, and never once have I heard the sound of the fan in recording. It's very, very quiet, so I wouldn't worry about it at all. You have many options even if was loud enough to pick up on the shotgun mic (never happened for me with on camera mics - the lens focusing is usually louder). Stabilisation wise: for photography IBIS is something I miss on the R5. The OIS on the RF lenses is excellent, and probably better than EF lenses, but the IBIS + OIS combo of the R5 is magic for photos. I'd argue that the R5C with RF OIS is a bit better than a DSLR with EF OIS. If you can, rent an R5C and test it out with your longer lenses. You might find it acceptable, or you might hate it. Better to try before selling your R5 and/or buying an R5 C. If I required longer shots and potentially handleld, I'd buy or rent an R7 to complement my R5 C. The video matches really well and has similar oversampling and it has IBIS and a 1.6x reach. Check out some KZfaq reviews for the R7 video and bird photography; there's a few about and it could be a good solution for you.

@NaikMedia
@NaikMedia 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your opinion and comment =) I think it comes down to your needs. For my uses this surpasses the R5 in almost every way. The only thing I miss is the IBIS in photo mode, but it's something that can ruin video footage which I shoot more than photos, so it's a compromise I'm happy to make. I'd recommend getting more acquainted with the video benefits and you'll see that the video quality is way beyond that of the R5 (e.g. extended dynamic range, better colour and falloff). Check out Josh Sattin's videos on how to properly expose C Log 3 - when I learned this properly the video footage just went to the next level. Hopefully the regret fades, and you start enjoying it more. It's a powerhouse for content creation. Cheers!

@NaikMedia
@NaikMedia 2 ай бұрын
@@allinthemind2006 What lens are you using for the S&F mode? EF-S lenses don't autofocus in S&F mode, or have limited focus options. You really should be punching in to check focus in any case for best practice, this has saved me many times and isn't an option on the R5 (while recording). When your shutter is set to angle rather than speed, the camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed to 2x that of the frame-rate - so if you're filming in 50p and switch to 100p, then your shutter speed is automatically changed from 1/100 to 1/200 (if using a 180º shutter angle). Turn shutter to speed if you don't want the exposure to change, but you'll have jittery footage. Or put iso settings into auto. Or assign one of the buttons to S&F shooting (that's what I do, but I still have to raise the iso as it darkens the shot). Custom modes might help, I don't know. You know in the end what camera works for you best. How much would you like for your R5C?

I'd like to know which one has the best image quality, not counting resolution or sharpness. It seems that the c70 still has the better Cinema output, but I don't own one yet. What is your take on that?
@NaikMedia
@NaikMedia 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! Here’s my take: Even ruling out resolution, to me, the oversampling in the R5 C makes its 4K footage look cleaner and more detailed than the C70 (*when exposed correctly*). Oversampling is one of the reasons the C100’s HD image is still lauded 10 years later. What makes an image more ‘cinematic’ to you? More film like? Better highlight roll off? ‘Cinematic’ to me means more the choice of shot, the control of the lighting, and the narrative of the footage, so image quality doesn’t enter into it in my mind. Super 16mm film looks objectively poor quality compared to most other formats but can still be cinematic and subjectively pleasing :) The R5C and C70 are so close on image quality that it really comes down to all the other factors, which are far more relevant for making content (particularly cinema content): size, weight, handling, rigging, useability, content distribution requirements, client specifications, other crew and their needs etc. The c70 is unuseable *for my purposes* hence why I sold mine. Do I miss the image quality now I only use the R5 C? Not one bit. The R5 C is far more useable for me, more rugged, and more dynamic with incredible image quality. BUT: there will be C70 users out there saying the exact opposite. It comes down to your usage, your requirements and which camera makes you happiest (something underrated in my opinion). Comparing image quality is a wasted exercise when they both produce such good images. I’d recommend you try use both, and see which feels natural to use as a film-maker/videographer. Leave image quality comparisons to tech engineers ;) One thing I would say in staunch favour of the C70: it is more forgiving with exposure. If you mess up exposure the image will still be clean. The same cannot be said for the R5 C: you need to practice with it, and know how to best expose it or be plagued with nasty digital noise. Josh Sattin explains how to expose c log 3 the best. However, on the flip side, if you mess up focus, the R5 C’s detail and 8k is more forgiving.

Thanks for commenting :) There are a lot of reasonably priced gems out there: this lens in particular, the 50mm 1.8 stm, 17-55mm 2.8, and the 18-135 STM. I’m using that last one a lot recently and it is *excellent*. Ignore the chart sharpness videos, these EF-S lenses are brilliant in real world usage. I’ve used the 55-250 and 18-135 in numerous ‘professional’ shoots. Clients love the images and don’t care the lens doesn’t have a red ring on it or cost thousands. You can find very reasonably priced and well taken care of samples on eBay etc. Oh, and welcome to the community! Enjoy using your proper camera! 🙌🏻

***This is for shooting in Log*** This might sound a little counter intuitive, but Canon’s ISO for Dynamic Rage & Log Data sheets for other cameras suggests that to get more dynamic range in the shadows (below middle grey), choosing an ISO ‘Lower’ than the base ISO, is the best way to get more information in the shadows. And with more information in the shadows, it would give better performance with the noise. Which I believe, is what you’re seeing with choosing the Base ISO of 3200, but shooting in 800 ISO. (Shutter speed and aperture permitting) I wonder what would happen to the noise in these images if you chose the Base ISO of 800, but recorded in (400) 200 or even 100? According to the data sheets, it would suggest the noise would clean up here too? (Again other parameters permitting).
@NaikMedia
@NaikMedia 4 ай бұрын
Recording in an iso setting below the base iso actually crushes the shadows more, reducing dynamic range (base iso will always have the most latitude). By recording an iso below the base and crushing the blacks slightly gives a cleaner looking image, but reduced DR. This is what I’ve learned from watching other videos on the subject (Crimson Engine does a good one on it)
@lecolintube

@@NaikMedia Awesome, thanks so much for the reply, and yep you’re absolutely spot on. Apologies I’ve just re-read my above comment, and you’ve more accurately described what I was trying (and failed) to get at. You do lose Dynamic Range, as the bottom two stops get crushed and you lose DR above middle grey. Here’s the video (or one of them) from Crimson Engine, where Rubidium describes what happens when you shoot below native ISO and why doing this gives you a cleaner, less noisey image. (Same applies but he’s using the C200) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rs-kabOq1NvOaX0.htmlsi=41rSwbnFbgixf4tp (Time @ 2:32) Am I understanding this correctly though, is this what you saw in this video with the R5C - choosing Base ISO 3200, and shooting below it in ISO 800 - resulting in a less noisy image? If so, I still wonder if you’d get the same or similar results using the lower Base ISO 800 and shooting in even lower ISO’s (say ISO 200 or ISO 100)? Thanks so much again, thanks for the video, and thanks for helping clear up my previous comment.
@NaikMedia
@NaikMedia 3 ай бұрын
So sorry for the slow response and thanks for linking the CR video (Rubidium…what a name - I love it!). Thank you for your comments too and the discussion :) I think what you say is accurate. So: Base ISO 800 + 100/200/400 iso = less noise, but lower dynamic range. Same for Base 3200 + 800/1600iso. People go on about dynamic range these days like it’s the be all and end all. Knowing that using below base iso helps reduce noise but lowers the DR is just another very useful tool in our belt.

For the times you don’t need 120fps, you can always write raw to the CF Express and HEVC to the SD card. That way if there ever was an issue with colour or exposure you have a backup - and with Angelbirds 1TB CFexpressB costing the same as an SD card, this is my new setup. Enjoy shooting surfing!

I adapt this lens onto my R6 MKII and it’s a beast! The mirrorless cameras like the STM lenses which I have purchased all of them over the years. I like the STMs for my C100 MKII & 90D. I tried it on my R62 and was pleasantly surprised at how good the STMs looked.

I have a few STM lenses and you’re right: they’re perfect for video (silent and smooth).

I wonder what cameras were used in the "million pound menu" in netflix, by far the noisiest show i have ever seen in this platform... and then Netflix decides to ban this ovr noise...

Yeah, I think the banned this simply because they didn’t want to approve any hybrid/mirrorless cameras. I’m convinced Canon was affronted and ‘finessed’ the situation but that’s just speculation 😁 Good content is good content at the end of the day, even if filmed on a potato (eg Blair Witch Project, Black Swan)
