I got into football only in 2001-02, so late into your time at Liverpool. At the time I had little more than an abstract understanding of how badly injuries affected a pro footballer's career; it kinda just crossed my mind, seeing back all those amazing highlights and thinking "How does such an amazingly good footballer play so little?". Despite not getting to see very much of you, you fast became one of my favourite players (I didn't, and still don't, support any one team, instead I look at players), esp when you moved to Portsmouth, got to play a little more and scored what is still one of my absolute favourite goals of all time (the spinning volley vs Charlton). Fast forward to 2019 and I busted my ACL and meniscus, then eight months into rehab the meniscus re-tore and needed a second surgery which, because of Covid and it being a non-vital surgery, took another year to happen, and throughout that time I found myself looking at all these players I knew who had terrible or serial injuries- Ronaldo, Ledley King, Roberto Baggio, Djibril Cisse, yourself, Hector Bellerin did his ACL around the same time, seeing how they would keep coming back to do what they do, and it helped me focus on getting it right and getting back on the pitch again. Obviously I'm not playing anywhere near the level of a pro, but football has always been important to me and getting that focus was necessary. I'm pretty sure I said to myself at least once "If Patrik Berger could keep coming back and hitting it the way he did, it should be possible for me to achieve even a fraction of that". So thank you Patrik for being an inspiration. You deserve to be remembered much more fondly and much more than association with the at-times-great-but-often-messy Evans and Houllier years. It was a real shame how much injuries got in the way of having even more of a career and, having heard how much they have affected many players in post-playing life, esp recurrent knee injuries, I sincerely hope that you are okay, not suffering long-term effects and able to do everything you want to.

legend, my favourite player when I was a kid, I remember I couldn't believe it when we signed him. had his name on the back of both my home and away shirt I had that first season. remember both goals against Tottenham clearly as I was on the 18 yard line sitting in the north stand. was great watching this video 👍

Idol of mine as a lad. Left footed like me & loved a shot from range. Goals V’s the Ev & the mancs, that free kick at Old Trafford! Hat trick goal at the Kop end V’s Chelsea & a member of the treble winning squad. The first team I really fell in love with. Always remember the commentary from his long range goal away at Derby.. “That’s er, Barmby’s dummy… Berger… WOW!” 😍

When I first started supporting Pompey in the early 90s I never thought we would one day see a player of Patrik Berger's calibre at Fratton Park. What a player. That Charlton goal lives long in the memory.

I remember him getting a couple of direct free kicks in to the Milton End against Villa on a particularly windy day. My memory is that they were from about 40 yards out - my dad said "what's he shooting for? you don't score from there", before the first one, and in it went. Shame there's no footage of them (it wasn't a televised game).
