At the time that this documentary was filming inside Nintendo HQ, a little secret project that they would have been working on was Yoshi's Island. 🏝️

Just getting back into retro games and I can understand what you're talking about. The same is true of vintage synthesizers and other music equipment. I guess it could be a problem in all areas of rare and collectable items. Just this morning in August 2024, someone has got a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128k +2 for sale on Ebay at a whopping £399. It isn't even the first +2 (the best one). These can be grabbed for as little as £50 in the UK as there were millions of them. Some KZfaqrs are pushing them up in price for certain.

I do think it is a major problem with the influencer economy in general. Once something is marketed successfully via these channels, the demand grows and prices spike. They do eventually normalize, but they never seem to revert to the price tags of the "good old days."

i own pulsation and air, both are beautiful books! i had no idea that a 35th anniversary book was released, ill have to pick it up sometime. i also have an artbook for the patlabor 2 movie which breaks down a lot of the technical work in animating the mechs along with storyboarding. i recommend picking it up! i found it being sold secondhand at a convention, it was discounted bc of some yellowing, but its perfect for my collection. i love patlabor, one of my most favorite series ever. awesome video and review!

Thanks for the kind words, fellow Patlabor fan! It is interesting; your comment about the Patlabor 2 artbook made me look in my DVD collection. I have the special edition Patlabor 2 DVD and it does have two artbooks: one with concept art and location photography and another with extensive storyboarding. Not sure if that is similar to what you are describing, but I enjoyed thumbing through those books this evening. I went to Tokyo a month and half ago and it was cool seeing the location shots from the 80s/90s/00s. Now I want to go back and watch the film again!

Love your anger. Cool video. I like small, niche subreddits because when the communities are smaller, there is less of a requirement for intense moderation and so communication/posts are more free-flowing. I stay off mainstream Reddit, I agree with you that it’s not really a place to actually communicate with people. Especially with upvotes/downvotes. People just upvote whatever they agree with and then everything becomes a massive echo chamber. Sorting comments by controversial makes the site more fun to me

I appreciate just the fact that ps5 is quiet. Honestly have no idea how people put up with the ps4. It's so loud, cant even hear the game.

That's a good point. My PS4 Pro was quite loud. Between the speed, framerate, and silence, the PS5 is the best way to play PS4.

Great episode as always. People definitely game here more on their phones than on consoles in my experience living here. Especially people in their 20's on down to junior high/high school age range.

Thanks! In a way, it's kind of sad to see that the younger generation plays primarily on mobile. In your opinion, do younger people still show an interest in physical media at all? Some younger people I know in the US still show some interest physical media, even if they're primarily mobile or digital players. Curious to know if younger Japanese kids show an interest in retro culture.
@pharaohstatus9333
@pharaohstatus9333 15 күн бұрын
@@GameEscape Yea, definitely understand what you mean. There are some young people that still game on console, but it's like 90% or more on the Switch because of the handheld capabilities. Out of my 10 years hear I've rarely heard of a school age person or early 20s say they game on anything other than the Switch or mobile. Once you go up in age a little you start getting the Playstation gamers coming into the mix. I've never met a young retro gamer, people closer to 30 or older you'll start to get some in there. Which I guess makes since especially for the ps4 and ps5, the games are really expensive here. Converting to dollar it's not so bad, but if you're strictly getting paid in Yen your spending almost 80 dollars for a game on the newer consoles.

I was a teenager when the TG-16 and Genesis first came out. I wasn't even aware of the console release since I was only reading Nintendo Power at the time. I only discovered these new consoles when I saw them at Toy's Ur Us. The store didn't have any demo or kiosks yet, it was just the game box sample in those plastic sleeves with the purchase tickets they had. I was blown away, with the game screen shots in the back. I first noticed the TG16 and saw the alien chrush screen shots and was thinking "YOU CAN HAVE GRAPHICS LIKE THIS AT HOME!" Then I noticed Sega had a new concole was blown away as well. I wanted one of those new consoles badly. I finally leaned on getting a genesis because later they had live displays of Altered Beast and the paralax scrolling in that game blew my mind for a home console. That's a little funny your parent's overridden your choose of SNES to Genesis out anger that Nintendo released a new console. Given that Sega did the same thing (release the genesis even though they had the 8-bit master system).

You could definitely have gotten by with the a lot of peripherals and some key games, but like I said in the video, I felt like I was missing out on the generation by only having this system. Now, if you had access to imports back in the day, that would have been cool.

look, i dont care if theyre worth 100$ or 5 bucks in the future, i buy my games physical cuz eventually all of those servers will die and i won't be able to play em, or even play them with my kids when theyre old enough! thats the worth i find in them, methinks
@GameEscape
@GameEscape Ай бұрын
I've made that point on past episodes as well. When the serves die, or just when the corporations that control the IP restrict your access to games, people will want physical, playable copies, and these games will retain some of their value based on that fact alone.

Interesting, I also agree. I came into collecting second hand video games when they were not in demand and cheap 24 years ago. I would never pay rrp to speculate on future prices. I don't have many Switch games maybe 30ish but when I did buy, it was for games I wanted to play (including og messenger release) The main points I would look into for future prices. 1) Mass cross platform titles. wouldn't surprise me if most in demand games get released of future hardware. big negative for prices going forward. 2) Extended print runs. I have seen many Switch games that were out of stock get reprinted. 3) Nostalgia hold. I would say most kids today just download titles and dont actually care about the physical releases, and most of these games are bought online, and it doesn't have the same hold going forward, as going into a store and seeing all the titles that you cant have when you were younger. 4) Flash data. I know its a unknown but how long do these switch carts work for? I guess time till tell but its major risk.
@GameEscape
@GameEscape Ай бұрын
It's interesting, I can definitely see today's generation not caring about physical media, but if this is truly the last console generation with physical releases, then I think people may care about that. Nostalgia in the age of social media is often discovered, and not just the result of experiences in childhood. A great example is vinyl: today's teens were not around for its heyday, but some of them are buying it. As for the flash data argument, I have heard that floating around the internet, but I can never find a source that explains technically why flash carts will have longevity issues.

When I was 11 I visited my family in India for 3 months in the summer and it was dreadfully boring. There was no TV and barely any electricity. I remember my uncle bought me a 40 pack of AA batteries and I was able to survive my 3-month visit to India being glued to this game! This brings back so many memories. I now have children of my own who play Zelda on their Nintendo switch and showing them. This was very nostalgic and awesome. Thank you for the great commentary and video.

Ah, the good old Nintendo that we have always loved and when Iwata was alive! The old time when Nintendo care a lot about his own community and listen them... Unlike the Nintendo from now since the Switch era with Iwata no longer here anymore which they more care for the money from the popular cash grab games franchises such more than 10 Pokemon and Mario games and 6 Kirby and Fire Emblem games that we get since those 7 years and doesn't listen their own community when they ask for a new Star Fox, F-Zero and Kid Icarus game or a remaster game on the Switch if Nintendo is too lazy for made a new game just like they did for the Donkey Kong Country serie by do 2 port due to the lazyness of Nintendo for made a new game but give somes attention to the DKC serie so, to be honnest, I don't expect anything toward their next console the day when they will reveal something about it and I don't feel any hype for it unlike the previous Nintendo console before the Switch.
