The stick to hold the stone is a handy trick, I normally use my DC3 in hand but that obviously runs the risk of slipping and needing to break out the first aid kit, will give that a go next time i need to touch up my edge in the woods

I have to admit thats a real clean set system, the one thing I would add maybe is a set of five rubber bands, however you make them, as fixed lines don't necessarily stretch well under sudden load like a widow maker, or a human slipping on bananas, but also if you're in the wind the rubbers take the pressure off and adjust tension so that everything is always tight but not under pressure if that makes sense. And overnight they absorb the stretch from wet lines compressing under the tension. One on each corner and one on the ridge line (can still be attached with prusiks of course). I make mine using the micro paracord double loop inside a 2-3 inch fitness band looped back on itself to cover the knots that you cinch in place over the outside as the loop that goes through it if you follow. I do prefer folding to save space, but that method of folding then stuffing whilst on the ridge line still, I love that, I will use that in future when it's wet and folding becomes less pragmatic.

Hi Jamie, Great video, two questions. Is this the system you still mainly use? and maybe slightly unrelated but I was wondering what the backpack you have in this video is? Thanks a lot
@HowlBushcraft3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig, great question. Yeah I use this most of the time, certainly as a baseline setup. The joy of a tarp tho being that’s so versatile, I do a bunch of other stuff regularly too. The pack is a Tasmanian Tiger 45lt rucksack, I’m afraid I can’t remember the exact model. A good pack, solidly built.

@@HowlBushcraft thanks a lot man. I guess that makes sense as once you've found something that works it'll only need small tweaking depending on the environment, or as you said, you're able to do something else entirely different. Thanks again.

Although a year ago, good to see, glad i came across this video. Robin said in the film he was proud of his axe, and so he should be. I having just gotten into wood carving, a short while ago, i bought from Robin, Wood Tools a carving axe and just like in the film the blade for so so sharp i was amazed at just how sharp it was, I have never seen an edge like this before absolutely awesome. I have also now got a compound curve spoon knife, well i will have on the 16th Feb Birthday present from my good lady, can't wait. Absolutely fantastic tools to have and proud to own them. Top craftsmanship from Robin and his team thank you. Very well packaged as well very secure indeed.

Great video thanks. Lovely to see the axes being prepared and design explained. I recently received the woodland axe and it is superb. The handle is not too thick, wields well, with a heavy enough head to cut deep. I really liked the bushcraft axe but it was stolen. The woodland axe feels even better - I prefer the thinner shoulder. What a brilliant tool.

Nice one dude, I’m glad you found the video useful. I use a braided polyester cord as it doesn’t absorb water and stretch like nylon. Those lines I use in the video are on my website howlbushcraft.com

Where is your forge? Rhineland pattern. The steel wedge splits the top of the handle because the grain is wrong. The wedge splits the grain because it runs in the same direction. This style of axe has been around a long time.

Hi m8, great video really enjoyed it just a quickie if u don’t mind, what’s your preference if bush pot and pathfinder cup over the popular crusader cup and canteen and zebra pot and is your preference a 14 cm over12cm? thx Jamie👍
@HowlBushcraft4 жыл бұрын
Yes mate I've gotta say I was very reluctant to move away from my crusader mug but the pathfinder cup does a have an excellent range of use, and is more packable. I still take my crusader on exped as I can cook in it if I don't want to take a billy can. I have a few different sized pots but I generally use the 14cm pot, it's plenty big enough to cook full meals and also boil enough water in one go to fill a days worth of water bottles with clean water. It's why i only stock the 14cm ones on our store. thanks mick, i appreciate the support
