Thanks for this simple-to-follow video. I'm troubleshooting a clunking sound after breaking a needle... and all the low hanging fruit has already been ruled out. The screws on my gear are immovable. I am pretty sure I would break the tiny allen wrench before anything moved. It is RIGID. Maybe I just can't get enough leverage with fingers and this little tool?

you know, you can just leave the 20rd tapco mag in and feed it with stripper clips insted of changing mags.
@user-pt3cm2mf6jАй бұрын
Never had a problem with my 30 round mags. And as for the bolt staying open for changing mags, mine does it just fine. When it empties it stays open. Obviously he is inexperienced.

This guy is mostly on point, except, there are NUMEROUS brands of aftermarket SKS banana magazines, some work FAR better than others. There are also differences between Russian, Chinese, and Yugo SKS variants which accept different duck-bill magazines differently. There are review videos explaining as much. Having said that, a 30-round mag is very practical of you don't want to reload 3X more frequently (although, the ten-round stock mag and stripper clips are gonna work perfectly out of the box, no shopping around necessary, and unless you're expecting to lay down suppressive fire on paper targets at the rifle range, you can take a couple extra seconds to load in another strip into the standard mag). As far as a scope, I don't know a single SKS owner who doesn't have a compact accessory mount on their receiver. Get a damned scope for shit sake. You aren't gonna be any more accurate without one!

I went back to the stripper clip because they are faster even after I sanded the mag down to slide in and out effortlessly. Stripper clips are faster and easier to carry with less space taken up in your kit; the duck-bill mag doesn't fit easily into any mag pouch. Also, in a pinch, you can turn the weapon over, open the well, and drop loose rounds in, then close the well.

I'm trying to do this repair can you tell me what Allen key wrench size I need for it?

… the magazine issue seems a matter of preference. But saying that the sks isn’t a dmr… I’m not sure what is trying to be said here. For sure it’s not an assault rifle.

My tapco 20 round always worked fine and reloading off the clips works fine. I have had some 30 round mags that wouldn't hold the bolt open but they weren't Tapco.

YOu were right sir 7 yrs later about the price going up. For a top of the line Yugo 59 with bayonet and grenade muzzle device, youre looking at around $800-$1000. You can still find a Chinese version for around $500. I personally dont understand people who turn antique tech into modern warfare. Just get a MODERN rifle that can accept high capacity. Why ruin the nostalgia?
@user-sc6lm3rp7j3 ай бұрын
I modified my Chinese mag well for the duckbill mags. Use Tapco 20 round and have no problems. I bought a spare bolt and modified it to insert a mag on a closed bolt. (Kept the original numbers bolt unmodified) ... that works great. I also added an extended mag release that makes removing the mags easier.

I know this is 7 years old but literally every issue you talked about I’ve never had with my Sks using the stripper clip while hunting….isnt that quite noisy while stalking, shooting at, taking down game? I can load my 30 mag with 2 hands not 3. After cashing my mag why wouldn’t my bolt hold at the rear always has you don’t like the bayonet if they get that close you have bigger problems??.?.?.? That’s literally what the bayonet is for lmfao r u serious….

Excellent presentation of your problem. I hope you find the cause and solution to the problem that is causing it. I will monitor the issue for any updates.

Buddy got one for a deal, but it came with a scope mount and the 30 round magazine. He got a standard receiver cover for it, but when it comes to the magazine, is there a way to restore them to original 10 shot?

Thank you for the info. I inherited one from my father and have yet to take it to the range. Partly because I was fumbling with the big banana clip it came with I was like how the heck to if the bolt doesn't lock to the rear without a magazine in it. I'm going to see if there's a 10 Rd clip in the bag and just stick to that

1990 ish ... just after some guy shot at the 'Slick Willy Clinton' Whitehouse with one. I payed $79 for a Chinese long barreled version + $30 for a choate folding stock + 3 metal detachable mags for around $60. 7.62x39 was $89 for 1000 rounds back then also. Still have that rig set up in my collection.

I converted my SKS with a Tapco stock and clips and shot thousands of cartridges at the range and not one malfunction. When the magazine is emptied the action is open and ready for another magazine feed.

I bought 2 of the sks rifles in 1994 for around $75 each at a gun show. They were stacked in wooden boxes 10 or more rifles per box coated in cosmoline. Those were the days.
