Es que para dar el acabado que se quiere con un balín, este debe rozar en una superficie con buen acabado dejado con la punta del buril. Primero hay que dar buen acabado con el buril. Una punta bien pulida combinada con avance y velocidad. Ya el brillo lo da el balín pero si no hay buen acabado, el balín no corta.

Why didn't you grind where the head sits? Won't it be out of alignment with the tailstock now? The tailstock will sit lower.

Tengo un comentario en base a mi experiencia como tornero de más de 30 años. Siempre me ha gustado innovar. Y diseñar barras era mi hobbie. En ese tiempo observé que el aisi 4140, O 4340 es demasiado tenso. Tanto que no es necesario templarlo para que cumpla con un trabajo rudo. Pero por su dureza no es tan óptimo como el 1045 que es, digámoslo así, más poroso y menos tenso. observé que absorbe mejor las vibraciones aunque se temple....a esta barra que hiciste, si le haces tres ranuras de diferente profundida (de profundidad mayor cerca a menor lejos) no te vibrará nada aunque la fijes larga..

Lathe work starts at 3:57... :/ As far as constructing the tool holder.... why not just use a bolt and bushings? That was a lot of work on the milling machine to make it round, no?

for strength and rigidity when resisting pressure. the bushing is simpler to make but it will reduce rigidity

Thanks for the video. Upside down cutoff is a good idea but there are a couple of problems with yours. Tools bolted to tool posts have greater extension and less rigidity. The other thing is the angle, it should be ~5 degrees, you can cut that in the end of the blade but then it makes sharpening a pain. These blades get sharpened a lot so you want to just be able to touch them up on the grinder.

You should always clamp against a static surface with this kind of clamp. In this case if one clamp fails they both fail.
