I planted some from the store and they grew TALL while tendrils started shooting up and then laying over, getting all the plants tangled in a mess? Is this normal? Now with the hurricane Sally, half of them are layed out on the ground as if they were all top heavy and the wind did the final job of tipping them over? What a mess!!

My son says I'm obsessed with pumpkins. It's not that at all, I like trying pumpkins I've never grown before. Here in the southeast it's hard to find pumpkins that can withstand the vine borers. Hollow stem pumpkins are the first to be destroyed. Thank the good Lord I managed to get a few Seminoles and some crosses Seminole/Long Island Cheese and Seminole/Butternut. I like pumpkin any way you prepare it. Does that Cushaw have a hollow vine, and the Pink Banana? God surly blessed your harvest of food, now let's pray for a harvest of souls. God bless ya'll.

Hi Jeremiah, I will ask Sam when I get home. I know he just goes crazy planting. I know he does something for bugs but I will need to get the info from him. He sent me the video at work and I was so happy I just couldn't wait to post it!!

Jeremiah Lackey Sam planted about a quarter of an acre of the winter squash. That patch he plants five rows, each about 120 feet long. He divides those five rows up among whatever seeds he wants to plant. For instance; he may plant half a row of pink banana and the other half of blue Hubbard. Basically he does whatever he thinks is best at the time. He normally plants on or about the summer solstice, which normally works out beautifully in our area.
@jeremiahlackey15824 жыл бұрын
NENASMOM thanks for that info. That’s amazing. I may need to start planting some later in the season as a double crop to help battle the bugs. Thank you!

When you are a little tense you will grip the knot tighter and pull all your throws.Best way to beat that is loosen your grip, trust me when I learned that slinging got a lot easier .Hope that helps .Thanks again buddy.

Happy Birthday Sammy! Believe it or not but September 8 is also my birthday! Your garden is looking a lot better then mine is. We’ve had a horrible year this year. Most plants are yet to produce anything at all. That’s interesting with the grapes. Mine have never done that but they are young plants as well. Our potatoes did great this year but that’s about it. I know of someone in Mississippi who I believe it was peaches that after the tree set peaches they had a late frost and they saved most of the peaches I believe but the tree set on a second crop. They said it’s never done that before. It’s just a result of the weather this year. Happy gardening and enjoy all those squash your going to have.

So nice you're doing much better this year. Good to see you back. I also have a question: what is the bacteria you mentioned that you use against the butterflies attacking your cabbages? I'm really curious to know. 8}
@NENASMOM5 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, Sam says the name of the bacteria is Bacillis thuringensis, also called B. T. It is a common product found in seed catalogs, garden centers, or any place you find pesticides. It is made by different manufacturers, so just look for the active ingredient. It is normally sold as a liquid. 1 tablespoon per gallon of water sprayed on the plants to the point of runoff. It kills caterpillars. Always follow label directions.
