of course you don't have to, and this is generally beyond dispute whether not needing takedowns is a good thing or not, now that's a different subject

To Build an effective guard pull is easier than an effective takedown if you’re not a wrestler. To win you need to score points so the easiest way to win is pulling guard and sweep 🔥‼️ struggling for a takedown with zero wrestling in most cases will not work for beginners. It takes years of hard practice to have a decent takedown game.

@@808BJJ_Black_Belt the problem is that takedown expertise is easily nullified under BJJ rules. your opponent can always pull guard himself, and even if he doesn't, the BJJ ruleset is so permissive that it's relatively easy to block takedowm attempts (eg. in Judo you just can't use defensive posture). so investing lots of time and effort into practicing takedowns is just unlikely to pay off.

Pulling guard is kinda embarrassing

Adam's sit up sweep is effectively a single leg takedown. It's really hard to say there whether he was getting 2 points for the sweep or 2 for the takedown either way he clearly had a single leg. Not disagreeing with the premiss of your video though, there are plenty of examples of world champions in jiu jitsu that do not use takedowns at all.

Good point. I agree and feel like it would be scored as a “takedown” for 2pts as this exact scenario is included in the ibjjf takedown explanation video.

The guard game is less exhaustive then the passign game, but IBJJF tends to prioritize the guard game. Now it's even worse with these new rules against stalling. When you pull guard you are not defending takedowns with strenght or techinique, you are just sitting on the floor not allowing your opponent to not even try to take you down. It's insanely unfair. The only way to fix that is taking 2 points out if you pull guard.

I agree, I feel like passing is more exhaustive than guard, at least in the gi where you have to deal with lasso, spider, collar grips, etc. Those gi grips can make it more difficult to get into camping positions like in no-gi when passing. Which is why strong guard passers in the gi, especially in the lower weights, like Lucas Lepri always really impressed me.

"The only way to fix that is taking 2 points out if you pull guard." that's how it already works under the ADCC ruleset (maybe it's a single point, i can't remember)
